In light of Hurricane Irene (Category 1) currently travelling along the East Coast of the U.S., I'm convinced that what I experienced while in Sosua in early January (approximately 4th) 2010 was also something similar. If not a Hurricane, at least a Tropical Storm! Ironically, this severe weather occurred about a month before the
Jan. 12, '10 earthquake in Haiti!

Can ANYONE confirm whether there was a Tropical Storm (or larger) in the Sosua around that time? I've looked on many websites for some information, but have not been successful, at this time!

Thanks, in advance!

I dont think that you can have tropical storms/hurricanes in January although I wil bow to more informed DR1'ers. Have checked my usual sites history & can't see any mention of anything around January 2010; the first one was hurricane Alex in June of 2010.

January 4 would be outside what is normally considered the hurricane season, but that doesn't mean you can't have a hurricane or tropical storm in January. The present date for the end of the season is later than it once was because of storms occurring after the previous date.

To be called a tropical storm or hurricane it must be cyclonic, originate in the tropics and have winds 39-73 mph for a TS and above that for a hurricane.

More likely in January are winter storms that originate in the North and drop down far enough to affect the North Coast. Some of these have quite strong winds. Very likely it was one of these that you remember. The wind strength could have been in the TS range but not called a TS because winds not cyclonic and the origin was in the north, not the tropics.
