Edesur Dominicana, the southern electricity distribution company, has successfully dismantled over 1,000 illegal electrical connections across multiple provinces in the country. As long as there is a way to steal Dominicans will be doing it.
I have a friend who thought he could make an illegal tap to electrical in his attic by having a cut out in his weather-head service drop.
Well the electrical companies are more sophisticated in the US knowing when power is being stolen.
They have service rings where they know how much power they deliver to that ring and can check it vs consumption of meter.
Now with computers and remote metering computers can notify them of potential issues.
Then when they suspect theft they put in usage monitors in the area and close the ring down to isolate excess power used vs metered.
Yes they eventually caught him and his fine was $25,000 plus the estimated cost of the excess power he used but had not paid for the house since he built it some 12 years prior.
