Edesur Dominicana, the southern electricity distribution company, has successfully dismantled over 1,000 illegal electrical connections across multiple provinces in the country. These operations, aimed at combating electricity theft and ensuring fair service for all consumers, took place in San Juan, Barahona, Neiba, Elías Piña, and Azua.
During the operations, crews from Edesur disconnected numerous illegal taps, seized various types of wires used for electricity theft, and worked to regularize the service for hundreds of customers. For instance, in San Juan de la Maguana, 57 illegal connections were removed in the Buena Vista and San Carlos sectors, while in Barahona, 75 illegal connections were disconnected in Villa Central, Paraiso, and Cabral, Edesur has reported.
In addition to disconnecting illegal connections, Edesur also offered payment arrangements to customers with outstanding balances and provided new meters and contracts to those who lacked them. The company emphasized the importance of regularizing service for all consumers and encouraged customers to visit their local offices for efficient service.
In Azua, Edesur carried out similar operations, disconnecting illegal connections and regularizing the service for over 70 customers in Estebanía. The company also replaced 400 meters of damaged cable as part of an agreement with the community.
Edesur has urged customers who have not yet regularized their service to visit their nearest commercial office to formalize their contracts and ensure a reliable and safe electricity supply.
Outside of the major cities and tourist areas such as Punta Cana, Bayahibe-Dominicus and Samana, in most provinces a majority do not pay for the power service. The new authorities in the power authority say this situation needs to change to make the service sustainable.
Edesur also seeks to crack down on businesses that are taking advantage of the special low rates offered to those living in low-income areas.
