Moringa – Water Purification

The moringa tree is an amazing tree with many beneficial uses, hence its nickname, the “miracle tree”. In a previous post, I wrote about the uses of the moringa tree and the moringa project on The Farm at Verde Gardens. I decided that the water purification properties of the moringa deserved its own post.

Villagers in many countries purify water with moringa tree seeds by using simple equipment. There have been studies that show this process greatly reduces the amount of harmful bacteria and solid contaminants.

Household Use: Depending on how clear the water you are trying to clean is, .5g- 1.5g (50-150mg) of ground moringa seed will treat one quart (liter) of water.

Allow the moringa seed pods to mature on the tree before harvesting them.
Remove the seeds husks, leaving a white kernel.
Crush the seed kernels to a powder with either a stone or a mortar.
Mix a small amount of clean water with the powder.
Pour the mixture through a strainer with a clean cloth which will result in a milky liquid.
Add this milky fluid to the water you want to purify.
Stir the water quickly for 30 seconds, then slowly and regularly for five minutes.
Cover the water and do not disturb it for at least an hour.
The clean water may be siphoned or poured off the top.

If you live in the sub-tropics or tropics, go out and plant yourself some moringa trees!

Seems like a lot of work.

The folks in el campo just boil it.

But the LifeStraw looks like a simple, elegant solution.

We have a clay water purifier we use for the dogs water. Seems to work well. I posted pics on DR1 before.

"Just boil it" works if you have a cheap ready source of cooking fuel. This isn't the case in Haiti or most of Sub Sahara Africa.

The Moringa tree sounds like a good idea for Haiti.
