The best golf course in the Caribbean and among the top 30 in the world. Its creator Pete Dye explaining how it was made.

One more interesting fact, Teeth of the Dog was his first golf course outside the United States.

Report on Teeth of the Dog.

I have played golf with Dye.... and we had lunch after.

One of the people at the table asked what course he was most proud of....
Teeth of the Dog

Why?
It created 150 or so permanent jobs in a country that needed them.

I have never forgotten that.

Teeth of the dog is not even close to Punta Espada, not Corales either. La Estancia is btw a hidden gem, would play that before Teeth of the Dog anyday. These lists... BS. I see a diploma in Playa Dorada about ones being one of the 100 top courses in the world. All about names, Pete Dye, Robert Trent Jones etc.

Punta Espada.

I think. HDR, that you meant to say that Playa Grande has some boast saying it is in the top 100 , definitely not Playa Dorada. Playa Grande along with Teeth of The Dog ,Punta Espada and las Corales and close behind are the much improved La Estancia and Hard Rock and one or two others in the east. They are all resort courses and are surrounded by housing estates ,except for Playa Grande. I can not see much difference between the top 4,they all have wonderful ocean views and are wide open and expensivve to play even if you are a Fedo Golf member .I play 3 times a week and find a certain monotony in them but La Estancia has planted hundreds of trees in the last year in contrast to the Casa de Campo courses that have eliminated hundred. The most influence in the rankings is not so much the names of the architects but the money they pay in advertising and promotions ,that gives Teeth of the Dog and Punta Espada a great advantage .

Nope, I played Playa Dorada last week and they still have the sign (Golf Digest 2006 I think). Playa Grande... VERY TRUE, but now not accessible. Glad that I got to play there a lot when it was like 15 USD a round. And true about the prices for those top courses... Iberostar best value, true Hard Rock, great deal with Fedogolf, Punta Blanca was also ok a couple of weeks ago.. And yes I like Guavaberry also on the way down from the NC. But yeah this year was the first time I played La Estancia, great course!

And true what you say about advertising and promotions.

Punta Espada.
None of those courses rank higher than Teeth of the Dog, though Punta Espada is the second best and within the world's top courses. The fact that Teeth of the Dog was created in the 1970's and it still ranks as the best in the region is quite remarkable. This is taking into account that the region now has more golf courses, but the DR has more than any of them.

I guess after the fact anyone can have a change of heart, but it is quite well known that at first he didn't want to design and build a course anywhere in Casa de Campo. If it wasn't for the persistence of Carta, it would had never been done.

Not so surprising that a course built only 50 years ago is still at the top ..after all every course in the Rota for the British Open is more than 100 years old ,the best course in the Southern Hemisphere is more than 100 years old and the top US courses in most lists are old courses. The original video that you shared kindly here was about how the course was built ,in much the same way as many classic courses but the second video is little more than a promotion for Casa de Campo and no place in the world is better at saying how good it is.

@ Kipling

Playa Grande golf had to re-route the back nine to allow the Aman hotel to go in.....

They have improved the agronomy (much needed) and -Yes - Sell houses on the course
Some very names - Rickie Fowler for one.... and bigger

Private, private.... for sure

Thank you,,yes I was taken up to the course some months ago to see if I wished to invest there and played nine holes of the renovated course. It remains a delightful place but it's relative isolation is a two edged sword but I forgot to mention the course that was called la Romana Nueva which has a lovely course with well groomed fairways and greens that now has a relationship of some sort with the American PGA,Much as Playa Grande it is not yet overwhelmed by housing developments but because of it's proximity to the capital and relative cheapness compared to Casa de Campo I expect it will be built out this decade. It was not bull dozed flat by the construction team .It is less pretentious than the Teeth or Corales or Punta Espada but just as enjoyable.

Good news is, if all things in your life don't work out financially, one can always play Metro Golf for $20 with a discount. Probably will hit the ball further without having the stress of thinking about what that round of golf is costing you.:)
