Hello everyone! I?m planning a trip to Las Terrenas for the last week of May/first few days of June and am counting down the days. My husband and I are a Dominican/American couple and we lived for several years in Santiago and have most recently been in Texas for the past two years. We?re visiting family and friends for a few weeks in Santiago and Barahona before we make our treck to the Samana Penninsula. We will be brining with us six other friends and family members for our stay in Las Terrenas and while all of them are Dominican, none of them have ever been to this part of the island!

The Samana area is very near and dear to our hears as we honeymooned at the resort on Cayo Levantado in 2007. Since then we?ve been back several times and usually stayed in Las Galeras at Casa Dorado (which I HIGHLY recommend!!). This time because of the size of our group we booked Villa Celine on Playa Estillero which is close to Limon and about 15 minutes east of Las Terrenas (or so I've heard).

I?ve been planning and anxiously awaiting this trip since January. While I?m familiar with the area we?ve never really been to Las Terrenas (only driven through) so I?m hoping the expertise of the forum can fill in some of my gaps!

1) Food/Nightlife: We will likely be preparing most of our own meals during our week stay. I?m assuming there?s a supermarket in LT where we can stock up on food for the week. And I?m sure there are colmados in Limon if we forget anything. Aside from cooking, I know we?ll want to go out to eat at least once. Any recommendations for good/inexpensive restaurants in Limon or LT? Any local beaches have good restaurants for lunch? We also will want to eat somewhere nice (just the two of us) as my husband and I will be celebrating our 4th anniversary on this trip. Also, any good bars or places for dancing at night? Bachata and meringue are our favorites!

2) Cascada Limon: We went by horseback to see this on our honeymoon and loved it. We want to take the family but are not sure how comfortable everyone will be one the horses (from what I remember it was kind of scary!). Most of our group are in our late 20s-early 30s but my mother in law is early 50s. How hard is getting to this on foot, I've seen mixed reviews? Do you have to go with a tour company or is there a safe way to go alone?

3) Beaches: This is what I?m most excited about, and one of the things I miss the most about living in the DR! We plan to take a day trip to Rincon as this has always been our favorite (any tips for avoiding crowds at Rincon? The last few times we?ve been there have been TONS of people). We also want to try out El Valle (and the waterfall close to it) and El Portillo (we?ll have snorkel stuff with us). I?ve heard Coson is nice, how far of a drive is it from LT? There are also some nice little beaches I?ve heard close to Playa Estillero. We?ll have a vehicle with 4x4 so we?re up for exploring, any other hidden gems we should know about?

Sorry for the novel, I'd love any advice, anecdotes, recommendations, etc...

Week in LT

Hi:

I live in Las Terrenas for part of the year. Yes we have a nice supermarket here called Supermarcado Lindo. It is on Calle Principe' in Rosada Plaza. They have everything you will need and also a nice liquor and wine department. You can walk up to the falls. I am 59 and in relatively good shape. I did it a couple of months ago. If you go to El Limon you will see a number of places that offer tours up the mountain to the falls. Tell them you want to walk. You will probably have to have a guide and it cost 50 pesos entrance fee to enter the trail. You walk up the same trail as the horses do. It is not a difficult walk. It will take you about 45minutes to 1 hr. If you go in the afternoon it probably will not be as crowded. Most of the horse tours go up in the morning. Make sure you where sneakers and something with support, not flip flops. Something else you might want to consider doing is the "coffee road" tour. You are on 4 wheelers and the tour company takes you out into the country on the back roads that most of the tourists do not see. You stop at a small coffee/cocoa farm and a rubber tree farm. Lunch is included. It is $55USD per person. Two people to 4 wheeler. You need to reserve at least a few days in advance. The tour company is in Las Terrenas. It is called Indrinatour across from the large Claro store. There phone number is 829-348-7245. You can call for reservations. You pay on the day of the tour. Another thing you should do is go to Luis' Restaurant at Playa Coson. This is a very informal place with tables and chair scattered along the beach. The food is grilled. They have chicken, dorado(fish fillet)chillo(whole red snapper), camarones, pulpa(octupos), and lobster, but I think the season is over for lobster so it probably will not be available. With your meal you get rice and beans, salad, french fries or tostodos. It take about an hour for your meal to arrive. Wear your bathing suit and go for a swim or walk up the beach. This is probably one of the top beaches in the world. Playa Rincon is beautiful but there is not much there. In Las Terrenas Playa Las Ballenas is a very beautiful beach for swimming and it a lot easier to get to. Good luck and enjoy your stay.

Regarding the trip to the falls in Limon, it will be very hot. I think the earlier in the morning you do it, the better.

For a romantic and fabulous dinner try the new restaurant at Balcones del Atlantico called "Porto". It's right on the beach with a stunning view of the water.

LT Trip

Yes it will be cooler in the morning. You will also think you are at a busy amusement park because of all the people standing around the perimeter of the falls. If you want to have it to yourself start your climb at about 3PM. That will give you ample time to get there, swim and walk back before the sun starts to set. By that time it will also be cooler and you will enjoy the serenity of the falls. Also the restaurant at Balcones will be opening to the public sometime in late April and if you are interested you will need to call in advance for a reservation. You probably can't walk in off the street. I understand that they will be screening reservations for those people that do not have a residence there.

Beaches: To my opinion the very best beach on Samana is playa Coson, starting around 5 km away from Las Terrenas with the part called Playa Bonita. If you go swimming there - at the end (away from LT) the streaming maybe very strong.

To the other side from El Limon you have Playa Moron - before going there ask to locals, if access is still possible, we found it privatized last year. Behind Moron there is another nice and lonely beach called La Cana.

Playa Rincon (but I?m sure you won?t miss it when you saw Cozon ;) )became very touristical. But most of the tours end on the right side, when you turn to the left, where the small river is ending into the sea, you?ll also find small bars and deckchairs, many locals at the weekends, but nearly no tourists. Or stay somewhere in the middle and the beach is yours.

For bars etc. I can?t give you tips any more - the last 2 years I was at LT only for short trips from Las Galeras and things are changing very quickly in RD.

Have a great time there!

Thanks for the tips so far! Keep them coming!

We will definitely try to walk to Limon and will go in the afternoon to have less crowds at the falls.

A question about Playa Coson. Is this where Viva Wyndham Samana is? We stayed here a few years ago (when we were living in Santiago) and while we had a great time we were not overly impressed by the beach. I remember it being REALLY rough and while we had a good time boogie boarding, it wasn't good for much else. Is this a different part of Coson that is better or what am I missing?

As for Rincon being touristy, I agree, the past few times we went it was very crowded. When we went on our honeymoon we had it all to ourselves it was so deserted we swam naked in the middle of the day, it was fabulous!!! But we're never found it like that since then :(. We're going to try to go on a week day when there is no cruise ship in port to hopefully minimize the crowds but we definitely want to be able to share this beach with his family.

Thanks for the restaurant recommendations! I'm SO ready for this vacation, now if I can just wrap up grad school and pass my licensure exam I will be ready to take in all Samana has to offer!

No Need For A Tour Company

2) Cascada Limon: We went by horseback to see this on our honeymoon and loved it. You do not need a tour company. We took a cab from LT in Feb. It was $60 return. We asked him to take us to Antonia Parada (spelling???). She has a lot of horses and is a fabulous woman. She will set you up with horses and great guides that work for tips only.
I think all cab drivers will recognize the name if you tell them to bring you to Antonia. She seemed to be well known.
There is a nice Dominican buffet waiting for you (if you choose) upon your return from the falls.
We tipped our two guides a total of $25 US (they earned that and likely more).
The two horses, 3 lunches (we bought for the cab driver) and a few Presidente was $48 US.
I highly recomend going early in the day. We were there at 9AM and were amongst the first 50"ish" to the falls. By the time we were leaving the falls it was getting crazy busy.

If I had ever finished my trip report you would know this :ermm:

Enjoy

A question about Playa Coson. Is this where Viva Wyndham Samana is? I remember it being REALLY rough and while we had a good time boogie boarding, it wasn't good for much else. Is this a different part of Coson that is better or what am I missing?

Yes, that?s Bahia Cozon. Sorry, I didn?t know that you are looking for the best place for swimming around EL Limon and not for the beach with the most tropical "ambiente" there. I?m a European, for me Bahia Cozon is a nearly perfect caribbean, exotic beach with all its palmtrees hanging over the sea, actually very lonely, too. At some places at Coson water is flat without any waves, perfect for kids and for swimming, I?m sure you found them during your holidays at the Viva. I also think that you know more about Samana than many user here ;)

At Playa Moron, La Cana and El Valle you might have rough waves and streamings, too. Depending on the weather.

"Playa Estillero" - is that one of the beaches between El Portillo and El Limon? Or a part of Playa Limon?
Playa Limon also is a nice miles-long-beach, but at most parts without these (for Samana) typical palmtrees, very rocky in the water, but perhaps a better place for snorkelling as El Portillo? The fishermen (?pescadores) were very successful at Playa Limon, if you like fresh fish or "pulpo" you?re on the right place there. I only know Playa Limon by galloping along many times on horseback ;)

Concerning your way up to Cascadas de Limon: There are several paths (4 to 6?) up there, ask the locals, whichone is the best for you. Take your car or go there by guagua, with your Dominican family you are absolutely sure not to pay these tourist prices there. I was at Las Cascadas several times (went up on a private horse with a Dominican) I did not pay any entrance, paid Dominican prices f.e. for that large Presidente in that bar up the hill...

Why am I that sure, that you already know everything about that?

Saludos and have a nice time on Samana (sorry for my bad English)

I don't think you are going to have the big crowds at Limon since you will be there in May; therefore, I think going early in the morning will be better. Trust me, it will be super hot in the afternoon.

Let us know how everything went when you come back. I would love to hear your comments.

Thanks everyone, I will be sure to post about our experiences when we get back! Based on your recommendations we'll give Coson another try (especially if there's a good restaurant there too).

Another question: Is it possibly to hire a small boat from Las Terrenas (or any of the other area beaches). My husband and I are hoping we can go by boat to a small and private beach to spend our anniversary (it's at the end of the week and we think by that time we might need a day away from family), I've heard there are some pretty isolated beaches in the area that you can only reach by boat. Any ideas about this? Places? Prices? Recommendations?

Thanks so much!

Thanks Juniper and Ben.
I missed that one !! Where do you hire the boat ? Is it doable with young children ?
