hi there!
where could I find more information about Playa Dorada for my graduation work? I need to know for example about it's history, future plans(if there are any), tourist amounts etc.

I believe that Playa Dorada was created in 1992. The area features about a dozen separate "all inclusive" resorts and has more than 5,000 hotel rooms. There is a nice golf course, a small movie theater, and a shopping plaza. The resorts in Playa Dorada have organized to form Puerto Plata's (the city) only hotel association. The future of Playa Dorada is not terribly bright. The area has a glut of hotel rooms and frequently must engage in cut throat rate wars to attract tourists. Furthermore, the increasing popularity of Bavaro and Punta Cana are eroding Playa Dorada's DR tourism market share.

The Playa Dorada complex was in existence before 1987 not 1992. It started with a Jack Tar franchise later purchased by Jack Tar corporation and a Holiday Inn which was renamed Playa Dorada Resort and is now owned by Occidental resorts.

Thirteen more resorts were constructed after that. The project was administered by the Dominican Banco central. The World Bank guaranteed loans to encourage resort construction. There were tax holidays, duty free import of capital goods and other incentives including low inerest loans. The original investors were mostly Dominican businessmen and some Americans. Now the Spanish hotel chains such as Occidental and Hotetur have purchased many of the resorts.

Most of the hotels have been or are being renovating and new tourist attractions are being built in the Puerto Plata area. This should rejuvenate tourism to the North Coast as there is so much more to see and do than in the Bavaro/Punta Cana area.

The complex is approximately one square mile centered around an 18 hole Robert Trent Jones designed golf course operated by the Banco Central. There are three casinos and several discos in the complex as well as a shopping mall.
