Whats it like for partying. Is there lots of single women in mid 20s or more couples. I travel alone and have been to boca chica many times but I dont feel very safe there any more.

If you are looking for what I think you are looking for, may I respectfully suggest that you don't stay at an AI and venture into the towns of Sosua / Cabarete and stay at a local guest friendly residence and that way you will have more fun maybe...

Nightlife in Playa Dorada consists more of tourists than locals.

There is a disco called Mangu which is the most popular in the Playa Dorada complex.

Alot more expensive than outside the resorts, mostly North American music and mostly tourists. But it's good partying if that's the type of thing your looking for.

I prefer most local discos to anything in Playa Dorada, but if you could explain a bit more what you are looking for in particular maybe we could be of more help :)

I am not looking for chicas. I ment single women to meet that are about my age 29. I have an amigo that lives in costambar so he claims playa dorada is close to there. I have only been to boca chica and I am not really into what goes on there off the resorts. I am looking at gran ventana as a place that looks like it will meat my expectations. I am from canada and I will most likely be traveling alone so I whant to be in an area that is safe. I prefer to mingo with locals then with snobby turists. Is the local bars 24hr by chance. If I meet up with my amigo from costambar we will most likely be out very late. I prefer AI hotels so I dont have to worry about paying for meals and drinks. Can anyone who has been to playa dorada area give me info on what resorts are 24hrAI please. Thanks for your help.

Sorry to break it to you but the local bars have a curfew imposed. I know this has been extended slightly over the Christmas period but I'm sure it will be over soon so that wont help you.
If I recall, they close at midnight during the week and 2am on w/ends but I stand to be corrected as that may have changed.

Thank you drloca. I am sure we can make do with the bars closing at 12:00 or 2:00. Does any one know how much a taxi cab would cost from playa dorada to costambar area. And also how long of a drive would it be. I am trying to budget all the money I will need for my next trip. I am hopeing to be there for the end of may. Is the weather nice in may or is it the rainy season. I will be turning 30 the begining of june and would love to be in the dominican republic for that mile stone. Is there many other canadians in the DR at that time of year. Not that it really matters but I am guessing that the pacages will be cheaper if there is more people flying out of toronto. Thanks for any info you can help me with.:cheeky:

Taxi From Playa Dorada

You are looking at about $20.00 US if you hire a cab within the walls of Playa Dorada. The Taxi service is nothing short of Mafia within the gates. Walk out to the main road and get a Guaga or public car for a fraction of the price.

All rates in playa Dorada are posted and firm. We had a horrible experience where I shopped around a found a driver that would drive us for less than the posted rate. The head of the taxi union found out and started screaming at me and demanded I show him the driver so he could fire him. Just what I want on vacation.

I have been to the north coast 9 times and love it . Always swore I would never stay in Playa Dorado but due to many circumstances we ended up there. For more reasons than the one listed here I would never go back to Playa Dorada. It just isn't the real DR that I love.

I have found it is very easy to get reasonable flat rates in Playa Dorada.

So somebody told the head of the taxi union about your deal and then pointed you out to him?:ermm:

No , I had negotiated the rate the day before . Then when leaving the hotel the bell boy insisted I use a cab at the hotel vs walking down the street to the guy who gave me the rate. As luck would have it the head of the taxi union (as I later found out ) was my new cabbie.
I told my new cabbie the rate I got from the guy down the street and all hell broke loose. After this guy yelled and screamed at me to give up the cabbie who gave me a lesser then posted rate we got in his cab at his extorted price just so that the nice fellow down the street would not got fired.

In hindsight my wife and I should have taken our 100 lbs of luggage for the 10 minute stroll out of Playa Dorada and taken legitimate transportation.

I have liked virtually every Dominican I have ever met EXCEPT this guy.

Yes, wise not to mess with the transportistas in PD particularly the union organisers. It wasn't that many years ago that they didn't like the jeep safaris picking up passengers from hotels & made their point with baseball bats on windscreens..........:ermm: It's OK if they sense a lot of quiet self-confidence in you but otherwise just best to diffuse the situation. They probably wouldn't have picked this up if you allowed the bell-boy to dictate what you did. Next time, remember that you are a client of the hotel and the bell-boy has no business stopping you leaving the hotel to do exactly as you wish but probably better not to publicise the fact that you have got a 'deal'. When faced with intimidating behaviour remain quiet, calm & absolutely resolute that you are going to do what you want to do. No-one can really make you do otherwise. If you're really self-confident smile in the face of intimidating behaviour - then watch while the guy winds himself up to apoplectic purple. :)
