Am I correct in assuming that there is no way for an SUV to traverse Cabo Cabr?n, and drive between Playa El Valle and Playa Rinc?n? One would have to drive down south and take Highway 5, correct?

The road to el Valle is not problem with an suv. And can even be done with the small rental cars without 4x4. I am coming there every week. First part from the road is asphalted, then 4.5 km sand.
2 days ago there was a small rental car on the beach. Do not know the brand but small and low without 4x4. They had to struggle a bit at the river... Yes, you need to cross an undeep river. Playa el Valle

There is no road between el Valle and Rincon. Then you need to rent a dunky.

For Playa Rincon, correct. Al way down then turn left. Road is in good condition.

Correct, the road into El Valle is horrible, and no other way to
Playa Rincon other than the HIghway.

The road's never been that bad when I travelled it, nor the rivers that deep.
I think most any car could make it... though a little clearance afforded by a small SUV would be beneficial as a few of the areas have some largish rocks.

Go slow and enjoy the reward at the end of the road.

Are you guys talking about the road (it starts off as a road when coming from Rincon, then turns into a trail according to my map) that runs west-east from Rincon to El Valle...or just the south-north road from Samana into El Valle?

I am thinking about doing a trip on my ATV which would require the east-west trail along the north of the peninsula, is that passable with an ATV? How deep is the river usually?

The road to Playa Valle is at the top of the hill after you have left Samana and wound your way around Rt 5 and come to where the road starts to straighten out. There is a sign there to make a left turn(coming from Samana). Follow the paved road for about 10 min until it ends and then proceed down a steep slope which seems like a dry river bed. From here there is about 6-8 kms of rough road. You will pass Samana Zip Line and then the condition of the road gets a little flatter and somewhat better. The river is normally about a foot deep and should be no problem. Once you have crossed the river it is about another 10 minutes to the beach. It is worth the trip. Combine the zip line experience with Playa Valle and you can spend a day there. I did the zip line last year. There are 13 zip line stations and it is well worth the money. They also have a nice natural pool and small waterfalls where you can cool off after the experience. At the beach there are a few restaurants where you can eat and drink. Fun day.

You are describing the route Samana town to El Valle beach right? I'm only asking because the original post was asking about El Valle to Rincon, just wanna make sure.

Yes, my directions are to Playa Valle. I am not aware of a route, except by boat, from El Valle to Rincon without getting back to the main highway heading towards Las Galeras.

On google maps there is a trail near the beach that eventually connects to a road leading to Playa Rincon. On Yahoo maps there is a trail from about half way between Samana town and El Valle, heading east, that connects with a bunch of other small trails leading to Rincon. Its probably just best to ask some locals if its possible, even though my experience with getting directions from locals has not been that good. Just looking for some fun routes with my ATV, when I'm there for Semana Santa.

Guagua from Samana direct to Play el Valle: about every 2 hours, 75 peso, beautiful ride.
The last one leaves Samana about 15pm, but don't take that cause then you have only 20 min time for the playa to reach the last guagua back to Samana and you miss for instance the connection to Las Terrenas. In that case you also have to walk 20-30 min from the playa to the Zipline as the last guagua doesn't come to the playa. I missed the last guagua in El Limon, so it was a windy 30min concho-trip from El Limon to Las Terrenas at 7pm (200 peso, without negotiation).

once again... you can not take that trial by quad!!! The locals will say yes but they are not used to quads. You kill yourself!!! I know that trail very very well.

when yo want a fun route take a fun route and not a dangerous route. Fun is el Limon to Playa el Valle for example. Or from el valle towards Loma pinon de azucar.

In about 10 - 15 years there will be a road along the coast from samana airport to las galeras. Trust me. I'm the guy who told u in 2002 that we would one day get our airport - after the other airport debacle.
