The pictures may not tell the whole story!

My novia was afraid to go to the beach because of all the young teen boys ''hangin'' there. The nearby hotel was quite dated and run-down. But, the food was good.

Trust me, there is nothing to be afraid of at Playa Palenque, I've gone there many, many times without my husband. He gets started on house projects so I drive myself there with whoever is around - mother-in-law, daughter, nieces, etc. He would never let me go somewhere questionable. We go to the far end of the beach to the area they call Cocolandia. Is your novia a gringa or Dominican? Was it during the day or at night?

I've stayed in both the hotels in Palenque, the older one closer to the beach IS old and shabby, but very spacious rooms. The newer one, a little further away, is more modern with good a/c & hot water, but the rooms are very tiny with just one double bed.

To show you how long we've been going there, here's a photo of our kids looking at some lobsters a diver had just brought up at Palenque - taken about 1983, they're 29 and 31 now.

She is Dominican

We visited in the early afternoon. It was intimidating, to say the least. Stayed at the old hotel.

Maybe a Bad Day

You must have been there on a bad day. I have stayed in the old hotel ( Hotel Playa Palenque) many times and walked the whole beach from the pier to the point at the far end of Cocolandia and I have never seen anything that was remotely threatening. I have been there during Samana Santa and there were some loud and drunk people there then but they didn't bother us. I have also spent a few early evenings dancing at Colmedor Angela near the hotel and had no problems. They have a dance floor that is right on the water. I have gone into Sabana Gran Palenque ( the nearby town) for a patronelli or similar fiesta and was advised that I had to take care there as there is trouble there from time to time. On one of my visits there a teenager was shot dead by the police but I never got a straight story as to what happened there. The wife of the owner of the old hotel is a local doctor and she gets called everytime there is a shooting. I like the hotel even though it is a little run down but the pool is very nice and the food and service in the restaurant are very good. The rooms are very spacious and the balconies are a nice place spend a quiet evening with a bottle of wine. They will bring dinner to your room if you ask. I hope to be returning there in October. I hope you give Palenque another try as it can be a very nice place.

Acira, we had a guy offer us a bunch of small lobsters, maybe 10 of them, for $1000 pesos. Another time we bought a huge lobster, 3 of us shared it, for $700 pesos. There is a rag-tag little fish market at the beach, but you have to be lucky because you never know what they might have.

Isn't that alway's like that, little shops at the beach selling the catch of the day, I don't mind really what they offer but I know its fresh...nothing better then really fresh fish ;)

South Coast is NOTHING like the North Coast - as long as you dont expect it to look like a resort, then you should be fine.... Also, this is where the people of the area go to the beach - in the afternoon kids go there for a quick swim and just chill out... but like the others have said - nothing to worry about here...
