there are four women who meander up and down the POP malecon on a daily basis, dressed in yellow polo shirts. they all travel in a group, and they all have the same stuff in their little suitcases. i wonder how they make enough money to stay alive, but i guess they survive, somehow, and changing their business model might be a tad too strenuous to contemplate.
one fine afternoon some years back, an Italian family stopped in at Barcos restaurant on the malecon for a meal. you could see all the trappings of a traditional old style family; the grandmother was the matriarch, and sat at the head of the table. the two sons and daughter sat closest to the mother, and the offspring sat at the other end. you could see the reverence that was displayed toward the mother; it was like saying thanks for making all this possible.
so what happens next? well there is some ape that walks around selling all manner of rubbish, not the least of which is some figurine of a man in a barrel. when the barrel is slid upwards, a spring loaded pole stands out, depicting a gigantic male erection. well, we were all aghast when this mope approached the table , gleefully demonstrating his monstrosity to the matriarch, to the evident distress of the family, all of whom recoiled in horror and embarrassment.
that is the poster boy for why some of these vendors need to be run out of town on a rail. they are just too dumb to be allowed around other people.

Cant the govt just require some kind of license plus maybe a daily fee for selling on the beach. Maybe even have a max number of daily vendors. Confiscate all merchandise from those who dont observe the law and throw them in jail for a couple of days.
Yes, but when you have vendors approaching continuously from the time you arrive at the beach until the time you leave, it becomes annoying.

I thought this thread was about bavaro but ive been to the beaches up north and understand the same issues exist.
I love the poor guy that walks up and down the beach in Cortecito area yelling " Sunglasses sunglasses" to the hordes of tourists resplendent in their sunglasses. It is like he is trying to sell snow to eskimos.........
people downplay this issue saying "oh, it does not bother me". but this is not the point. it bothers the others. it's like noise. some may say that omnipresent loud music does not bother them. but no one will say they get pi**ed off or annoyed with the silence. if you want to have music with you, put on the headphones and enjoy. if you want to buy sunglasses go to sunglasses stand. peaceful and quiet beach offends no one, bothers no one.

For the past two summers I managed an ice cream company in Ocean City Maryland. The company I manage paid $72,000 per summer to sell ice cream from 6 trucks on the beach blocks and it was strictly forbidden for us to actively solicit customers on the beach or even bring the ice cream to the customers. We were only allowed to play our music and ring our bells. Thats $12,000 per truck for 3 months. People spend a lot of money to go to the beaches in America and in the DR. No one likes to be bothered by overly pushy vendors. The last time I was in Bavaro they would even wake me up if I was asleep to try to get me to buy something. As a beach vendor myself I understand the desire to sell my goods but the dominican vendors have no common sense or respect for people that came here to relax.

I have been trying to ignore this since I am not there now. But, does anyone know exactly who they are evicting? Vendors on the beach? This photo shows what looks like one of the shacks on the beach. Is that who they are evicting or vendors walking the beach? I will be able to see in january but with each article it is less clear exactly what is happening. Anyone seen exactly who they are removing from selling?
