So in essence you would recommend coming down here, TRYING to establish myself to see if this is right for me before I make the move into the Dominican? I like where you are coming from with this, but I want to ask you what YOU believe it would take for someone to actually move and make it in this country. Does it mean having atleast $10,000 in savings, or is it having a very strong head on my shoulder? I am fully prepared for anything this venture may bring me. I am willing to do everything and anything to make this dream a reality, assuming i do indeed like the culture etc. I have learned through the boards its going to take some studying and visiting to affirm this is truly the route I want to take.

Unless you have connections, it is probably impossible to get a job in a casino. I have never seen a native English speaking person working in a casino. Most of the casinos are owned/managed by Spanish firms. (Years ago, there was one in Puerto Plata that was managed by an Israeli). The fact that you don't speak Spanish will make it even more difficult.

One time I was in a casino playing blackjack and the dealer was not able to add. It was incredible to watch. Every time she was unsure, she would turn to her supervisor for confirmation that she was correct. More often than not, she was wrong. It was obvious that she did not get her job because of her skills. I went back a few times after that and she was still working there.

If you do not know anything about the real life here, it must be a difficult decision for you to make, wheather you want to live here or not.
Give it a try and come down for a few months, see how things work out for you in the real everyday life here.
Some money helps, but many have made it without money.
A working brain, a sense of knowing right from wrong, some hard skin and a taste for adventure would make a good start. Add an open mind and alots of patience.

You are young, you can afford to try. You lose a little money, you gain lots of experience.
Learn society, learn culture, learn Spanish.. if this will lead you to stay here or if it will lead you somewhere else in life, you have still a damn good experience and adventure.
Just understand you start from step one, and you go step by step.
You need to be here to find an apartment, you need to be here to find a job... that?s how things work here.

Today exists in all senses, and tomorrow is the busiest day of the week.

US$10,000 is more than enough for some newbies and pocket change for others. You'e asking an impossible question, we all have different levels of lifestyles, wants and needs.

I came here in 97 with US$2000 and I'm still here.
What does that tell you? Absolutely nothing. I'm not you and your not me.

Some people here throw money at problems and situations in order to solve them. Others adapt, learn, grow and evolve. Then we have those that die and fade away.

If you have the desire and passion, you'll make it with US$50 in your pocket.
It's about you, not how much money you have.

Don't you get it yet?

Yes, I very much get it, and it was exactly what I was looking for in these boards. I do know enough Spanish to get by in the mean time, until I do learn the Spanish Language more thoroughly. I now realize what I have to do to decide whether this is right for me or not. I now am going to ask, what kinds of jobs are the most practical for an American moving into the country? Is it an English teacher??? I have to say that I was at the Decameron casino and they did indeed have an American casino dealer who was from Miami. How he got there, I dont know, but I have seen one in the short time that I have been there. Thank you everyone I am very grateful for all the responses

If you want the Dominican experience look in your own backyard!

I don't know where you live dude...but if you move to Washington Heights you will get more then what your looking for as far as Dominican's are concerned...don't go to the island...go to the Dominican social clubs, the night clubs, the softball games, the Dominican parades, etc.. right here in your own home in the U.S. your a young buck...from what I see I work with boys like you all the time...do not venture out to Quisqueya if you are not a sound young man with real responsibilities...you will be a sheep amonng wolves...

Despite the many social problems you may face in the U.S. you fight threw them, and you choose your path wisely...remember this word choices, you won't have many in D.R. unless your a successful business guru with major income...you want to go to D.R. fine! but do it the smart way....it sounds like you may not have good advisors around you and tell you take those 8 thousand dollars you have and invest it in mutual funds, stocks, and or maybe C.D.'s and if you don't know about this.. learn about them. In D.R. there aren't many boys there all men regardless of age...but you!!! you will just be a boy! your lost now and you will be lost there as well...you are asking these sound adult's silly boy questions, that you should know the answer to, Robert told you get an education...exactly... get one and don't worry about things you have no control of at this point, you are 18 yrs of age! do you own a home?, a car?...and if you do, this means you have some good credit coming your way....I am sure you aspire for good things in your young life..don't waste the oppurtunities that are given to you right now this minute! don't think your going to gain anymore exceptance in D.R. then you have here, you will be looked at as just..

:tired: hymm... que va,,ete tigere ta pasao!! ya lo veo..papa!! volviendo pa ya ma rapido que immediatamente!!!:nervous: this is called tigere talk if you don't know this lingo stay home!

Get your a$$ down here and experience life, 18 years old is a perfect age. Research, Research & Research, then buy a one way ticket and go for yours. Look if you fail, chalk it up as a learning experience, you're only 18. Trust me you'll blow way more than $8,000 in your life-time on other things.

Now if I was 18 years old, I would try to get a esl teaching position at Berlitz.
http://careers.berlitz.com/ bounce around South American and Latin American countries for a couple of years. And you'll save your 8G's.

Read all posts again...

... would be my suggestion, and then make your own desicion.

You are 18, you can afford to do almost anything, and "get away" with it,
and whatever you does not need to be forever.
If you want to travel and explore, go on adventures, you would have to do it now, "then" might be too late.

Heck, if I would have stayed where I was at 18 and desided "this is it", I would have missed out on alots and alots again.

But, adventures can not be planned. You can not plan where to live, where to work. You can just plan to go or not to go. ;)

Hello, I am writing as a frustrated American who fell in love with the Dominican Republic from the first moment I stepped into the country. I am currently only 18 years old, and do indeed understand that making a move to another country is a drastic change. I am frustrated with the American way of life. The racism, the economical segregation, some of the crazy laws here. I want to live in a place where most of the people in the area are simply happy to see you. I know that in the DR as with all countries, not everyone will welcome me with open arms and I am willing to accept that. I am ready to encounter some of the setbacks in the Dominican. I can deal with the constant outages of power, I can deal with a much more economically unstable community, atleast everyone more or less is in the same boat. I grew up not ever having alot, so all the "american luxuries" that most people assume all americans have, I will not miss. I enjoy beautiful beaches, and great cigars. Simple things that cost nothing but mean so much. I am visiting Juan Dolio again in a few weeks, to get a better feel for the country and if it is really what I want. I am looking for information on what I need to make this move a success if I do indeed decide on it. I am currently in school now for Business/Accounting, however I would absoultely love to be a casino crouppier or dealer, I would also be interested in being a bar tender. How realistic are these jobs for an American with a Low-Average amount of Spanish background. Also, will I encounter any problems because I am an American??? I also need to know about how much money I should plan on moving to the DR with. In a year I can have approximately $8000 USD, is that enough to get me started??? Please help me out as I would love to know more. Thanks. Please feel free to email me as well. Txrayngers@yahoo.com

by the way you just put this out, i got 2 answers for you

1. you either met this nice girl you fell in love with !!!!

2. you want to leave the american bureacacy (however you spell the world) and enter freedom in te dr???

all in all no offense but in the aspect ! your crazy !!! either way, dominicans in dr were born to learn to be poor, some of those people have the DOMINICAN USA connections and get money sent to them all the time, you cant live there unless you know exactly how much money you plan to spend, when me and my cousin go down there (were both dominicans) we take 2,000 and burn it like fire over there, of course we get special treatment but thats the dominican dream!!!! MONEY IS POWER learn from others, you live in one of the highest GDP per capita in the world 6x more then dr so please by all means vacation, if you can prolong your vacation stay here for 2-3 months but please think logically not optimistically!

"RAY",You said you want to get away from the "Racism",

and "Economical"segregation in the US? Well welcome from the "Frying Pan",into the "Fire"!!!
I don't know if you are "Black" or "White",but I do know, after 20 years experience in this Country,"Racism here is "worse" than in the US! And here there is nothing you can do about it! No Government office where you can file a complaint. If you have dark skin and coarse features, you are eliminated from the better jobs, and won't be allowed in to the "BEST" clubs. So if you are running "From" something, rather than "To" something you will fail. You also sound rather inexperienced and uneducated, two traits that will get you "Eaten Alive" in most foreign countries, and surely in the DR!!I'm betting your eight grand will be gone in about a month! Better to immerse yourself in the DR a little at a time."Four Days" is a waste of time. You need 2 to 4 week trips to "Begin" to get a feeling for the DR!Many of us "Expats" who have settled in the DR have traveled to,and lived in,many countries around the World before stopping heremyself included.A friend of mine once asked me how I was able to settle in the DR with such relative ease? I told him that it only took me 30 years and 350,000 dollars to learn enough to do it!
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.just remember that,
"When A Man With Money,
Meets A Man With Experience.
The Man With Experience
Usually Ends Up With The MONEY,
And The Man With The Money
Ends Up With The Experience!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go south young man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Txrayngers, very interesting post. I find it interesting because of your age, and you are already keen to many of the negatives in this country. I am a patriotic American, and I love this country, etc., etc. but our culture and society have a lot of problems. If you are thinking of the move now, at this young age, without having gone through the marriage and kids routine (assumption), you wouldn't think twice if you were married with kids, and lived, or tried to live, the middle-class, American life. It's immpossible, and you won't be happy. Our society and culture doesn't allow it. You can't keep up, and forget about getting ahead. There is no peace here for a man with a wife, kids, and a job. You will work your entire life, and then be too old to enjoy anything. My advice; and this is coming from someone with much experience in D.R., a divorced man, father of 2 teenagers. Do not get married (for now), do not have kids (for now), save some money, and learn Spanish. I will be 55 in 8 years, and my youngest kid will be 23, and hopefully out of college. The day after my 55th birthday, I hope to be on the plane to Puerto Plata. Yes, some of the things I've read in these posts are true, but for someone who isn't spoiled or materialistic, D.R. can be a paradise. If you want an uncomplicated life, this is the place for you. I'm sorry ladies, but for a Gringo, as far as relationships go, it is a great place for men. The culture is the culture, and I am not bad mouthing American women; it's not your fault; it's our culture. People are just not happy here. Women treat men differently there; it's not only for the money; it's also because we treat their women differently also (our culture). Again, sorry, but the fact that age is meaningless is an added incentive. There is deception in D.R., but it is out of necessity. In the U.S., it's out of greed !!! Maybe you can save enough to open a small business in the not to distant future. Avoid the larger cities, and you will reduce the amount of noise, crime, and garbage. Make contacts or friends in a smaller town, and start this way. Again, the desperation in D.R. does breed a lack of integrity, but you will learn and accept this. What you won't accept are the things you will experience in this country as you get older. I'll stop now; don't want to crash the server. PM me for more details.
