President Luis Abinader got his fourth shot against the Covid-19 virus. He made the announcement in a tweet.

He said: The government remains vigilant about the pandemic’s behavior. Today I am getting my fourth booster dose of Covid-19. I invite all the people to complete the vaccination schedule as suggested by our health authorities. #VaccinateRD

I remember reading in the news recently several vaccines have expired and theDR gob was looking to somehow recoupe their losses from the company (AstraZeneca I think) they purchased from.
Which vaccine did he receive?

Expired covid-19 vaccines have not yet been incinerated; are kept in storage, according to the PAI

He specified that there are enough vaccines for those who wish to apply a fourth dose or complete their scheme

The director of the Expanded Program on Immunization (PAI), Dr. Aída Lucía Varga, expressed this Wednesday that so far she has not incinerated the expired covid-19 vaccines, despite the fact that the health authorities reported that it would be their final destination.

The expired vaccines are withdrawn from the Provincial Health Directorates (DPS) through a survey accompanied by an inventory, a letter signed by the authorities of each DPS and they are stored to later be incinerated”, he explained, emphasizing that they have not yet have incinerated these injectables.

In February, Vice Minister Eladio Pérez Antonio stated that "the vaccines that are about to expire would be discarded or incinerated."

The specialist said that to date they have only incinerated expendable material that is used in the inoculation days in the different authorized centers.

"Until now we have incinerated waste, used syringes," Varga said without specifying the number of expired doses that they have in the warehouse intended for collection.

Overdue amount

Although the Ministry of Public Health has not detailed the exact figures for expired vaccines, it is estimated that up to March 30 of this year , approximately 354,240 doses of vaccines expired, which would add up to 708,480 expired doses in the last months of this year, which which implies a cost of about 2,800 million dollars.

Sufficient vaccines

Dr. Varga stressed that the recommendation made by the World Health Organization ( WHO ) on applying a covid reinforcement with a fourth dose to people over 60 years of age , is not a prohibition for citizens of other ages, but a recommendation for that the doses are equitably distributed to vulnerable people.

He stressed that there are enough doses for people who need to complete their vaccination schedule with a second, third or fourth dose against the coronavirus.

I won't be surprised at all to learn they continued injecting people
knowing they were using expired vaccines.
This is the Dominican Republic, not Kansas.

Actually, having organized at least two dozen medical and dental "operativos" in the Puerto Plata area I can tell you that Salud Pública takes expiration dates very seriously.

Part of arranging these medical outreach activities included getting prior Customs clearance for the medicines, dental materials and other items used.

Without fail, each trip there were doctors from Salud Pública at the airport in Puerto Plata. They checked the date on every single package of dental/medical material, every single pill bottle and even on bottles of Betadine, Tylenol and Ibuprophen. Anything outdated was confiscated on the spot.

Yet another example of doing things differently than past administrations.

Doing things differently yielding same results, sadly. The PN, the light, education, gasoline, food costs... All in the toilet. They have, however, managed to pretty up some parks and put up those colorful sesame street block letters for town names which make great photo backgrounds.

Band-aids on bullet holes.
I know how things are "handled" down here when it comes to the average Dominican and their attention to detail so I've no plans to take advantage of their booster program.

With 420 deaths per 1 million of population the country can claim success in this battle. Our planet's average is 830. (Reuter's data)

Three credits: (1.) Active government policy with very few mistakes, (2.) international help arriving on time and, (3.) last but not least, the absence of the anti-vax extremists.

Felicidates, presidente Abinader!

You forgot to mention the public's strict adherence to all mandates, and the massive uptake numbers for the vax. 😂🤣

While you're flinging around the term extremist, consider 4 shots in 12 months, none of which prevents you from contracting or transmitting a virus that over 99% of the population can withstand naturally. Can we not agree that within the context of the entire history of mankind, this is the very definition of an extreme action?

That "extremist" label is getting pretty tired and hasn't been sticking for quite some time. You may want to switch to one of the other popular deflections like racist, white supremist, far right, or *gasp* pro life.

The rules of this forum do not allow to extend discussions to other countries, but it would be an easy game to show examples where views and arguments like yours were loudly and aggressively brought to streets. With the result....

In the fight against pandemic the most reliable indicator of success/failure is the number of deaths per 1M of population.

No, it is not. We will never know the real assumptions behind the data collection effort from the different countries

I have had 3 shots (all Sinovac) and was considering the 4th after reading this but...

on considering it, I feel once a year after 3 will be fine.

I understand Abinader's position - trying to set an example, encouraging more vax in the country.

But I'll go annually from now on... like a flu shot

They just don't make "vaccines" like they used to. I haven't had a polio vaccine (or MMR or small pox) in a long time. Time for a booster?
