It looks like Presidente is intent on increasing their presence in the US. I just returned from Southern Florida where I heard a Presidente beer commercial on the radio. (I wish I could remember their slogan, but the commercial caught me off-guard).

Although the beers been available in the US for a while, it's the first time I've seen or heard any advertisement for it.

I just noticed I posted this in the wrong forum, if someone could move to the General forum, I would appreciate it.

We haven't heard the commercials here in the Sarasota/Bradenton area, but like you said, Presidente is found in the local supermarkets, mainly Sweetbay. All my fla friends that I have shared the beer with have been converts. The latest is a friend from Philadelphia who went back to PA, and stocked his refrigerator. This beer is goooooooooooooood.

Don't see or hear anything in NYC yet, where Heineken & Corona is ruling the market. Only Dominican restaurants, bars and discos carry Presidente, other than the few bodegas.

Maybe its just me but when i buy presidente here in the states, it just doesn't taste the same. Also the alcohol content is lower. So therefore, I don't buy it here. I always make sure to bring home some grandes from my trips. Has anyone else noticed the taste difference??

Try a blind taste test. I'd be willing to bet that you couldn't pick out the Presidente sold in the DR from that sold in the US.

Regarding the alcohol content I believe it's the same. Years ago when they first starting importing Presidente, it was a lower alcohol content. (I believe there were laws in the US that beer couldn't contain more than a certain percentage of alcohol). Some years back they changed the law.

You might be right rellosk. Perhaps its the environment of being in the DR that seems to make it taste better. Although all of my Dominican York friends say the same thing about it tasting diferent.

Presidente is the DR taste much better than that in NYC.

:beard: NO KIDDING! this is a no brainer hands down....actually guys i have heard a few Presidente commercials on NYC radio a couple of times so they are at least trying to expand. but it is not on the same level as 'larger' imports like heineken or corona....but whatever, i still love the beer.
I'm headed to DR on monday NOV 21st for the whole week! :classic:
I'll be at Boca Chica with my brother and cousin to relax and chill. I plan on doing a ton of driving and mingling with the locals and of course a LOT of Presidente drinking!
Anyone know of any PATRONALES going on that week and location? I will be in Boca Chica, Juan Dolio, Santo Domingo, San Cristobal, Yaguate and Najayo. that oughtta cover it! LOL :bandit:

It is the same beer. The beer sold in the US is likely to have "turned" or gotten "skunky" from getting cold, then warm and then cold etc etc etc IE when se fue la luz or the Presidente truck driver leaves the beer in the hot sun whaile he is in the colmado drinking miller. . . ..

When the beer is fresh and hasn't skunked in the DR it just tastes better because it is served ICE cold. Buy a 12 pack in NY, leave em in the freezer till just shy of frozen then move to fridge and start drinking. . . . listen to some bachata and you will not taste a difference.

It's tough to drink a Presidente in the DR that's not fresh.
The ones you drink in the states simply are not as fresh as what is sold here. It's shipped to the states by ocean, so by the time it gets to your supermarket shelf, it could be as much as a few weeks old.
Keep some Presidentes in your fridge in the DR for a couple of weeks and then taste it. You'll notice the difference.
Presidente is best when consumed "Fresh"
I think you may be right on the money!

I've been drinking Presidente for a few years when I was living in Jersey City, NJ, which has a big Dominican population, but I'm suprised how many liquor stores in my area carry it.

And yes, Presidente does not taste as good here in the states as it does in the DR. I'd love to find some Presidente Light here in the US.

I've tried my first Presidente in Switzerland in a Latin bar. It was delicious! I am fond of German and Latin beer mainly.
On my trip to the DR I evediently had to have my "fria" and yes it's delicious and fresh and mostly ice cold.... but I immediately got heartburn, a side effect I never experienced with Presidente in Europe and Switzerland.
I honestly doubt the Presidente you drink abroad and the domestic one are the exactly the same quality beer and here is why: Most brewery will carry an export quality and a domestic quality (believe it or not, while I can't stand a Bud in the States, I like it quite well in Europe). Secondly, I have been told that the problem of the beer in the DR being kind of agressive was known... that because of the high output the beer was brewn very quickly and therefor resulted to be "cruda". It was also suggested to try a different size (of botte) as they would produce different sizes in different breweries (?).
Still, Presidente is a great refreshing beer... I just need to use some heartburn controling medicine before.

I'm reposting someone elses idea but I totally agree with it. I think Presidente might taste differently in the US because of your mindset. I'm sure a beer tastes 10 times better while lying in the sun on the beach looking out on the Carribean ocean or sitting in a vibrant Santo Domingo resturant VS sitting in a cold apartment in NYC while its snowing outside WISHING you were in the DR.
