PriceSmart is fine for an ice cream cone, the few American things you cant live without from any where else and not much elses....I have shopped prices for towels, coffee, TVs and foodstuffs for business. I can often buy it cheaper at La Sirena, Janet's or even Chemi in Gaspar...even in quantity not worth the drive to Santiago...

I agree with this most of the time.. to shop at pricesmart effectively you have to know the unit prices of almost anything you plan on buying. Some good deals I've found at Similac baby formula (820 pesos vs 920 at La sirena), 3 lbs of shredded cheddar for about 300 pesos (way better quality than other places), tampico plastic juice jugs for kid's lunch (7 pesos each vs 10 at La Sirena, I have to buy about 50 at a time of these). Funny thing is stuff like diapers in a 300 quantity box are STILL more expensive unit price wise than other department stores.. doesn't make any sense. Oh.. also the huge bags of cereal are a good deal at pricesmart. We also buy dishwashing liquid in a huge jugs and just pour them into smaller ones. If anyone buys brand name detergent.. stop.. I found out recently that the brand name detergents are just the bulk stuff repackaged and sold at a premium (sometimes 5x the price).. just buy the huge 50 lb bag of detergent and be done with it. Toilet paper and crap like that is still more expensive at pricesmart.. it's weird sometimes.

Every now and again when I am with a neighbour friend we end up at a Costco. She is a member, I am not.
I happen to be with her in the car and as a result become a rather captive participant in the madness.
I consider myself to be somewhere between average and above average on the "intelligence quota" scale.....And as we enter the forbidden palace I invariably express my disdain for such emporiums of consumerism.
She simply rolls her eyes at me and keeps moving.
I follow, trying to keep up. Determined to prevail.
And then it happens........I begin to feel the draw.
It is the abundance aspect that gets me everytime.
Even the shopping carts are as big as a house.
All those giant size replicas of normal everyday household items......I reach out and touch them.
I can feel the tingle.
It tickles.
My brain tells me ..."NO"
My emotional reaction is to the packaging, not the contents.
I know it.
And yet I always end up with my own little pile in my neighbour friend's shopping cart.
Then of course, I beat myself up about it for days later.
The last time I was there I purchased a cordless telephone with 3 handsets and an answering machine.
( brand Uniden ).
For weeks afterward, everytime I opened a paper and found adverts for this very same product at far cheaper than I had paid, I felt the stab of humiliation.
I was "had".
They got me.
I swore then and there.........Never Again.
I think I have been cured.
I sure hope so.
Now pardon me while I go out to my local Brunet/Pharmaprix and stock up on my favorite brand of toilet paper. Majesta, two-ply, double roll. 12+4 bonus rolls for $4.99.
I like to keep it below 20cents a roll.
LOL.

most of products there have crazy prices. you can find better deals on the internet. this is how we bought a great set of cooking pots, global knives and lots of other kitchen stuff. i just think the quality of whatever is sold there does not correspond with the price.
Are you saying you can get a better quality and price online, even after the shipping/customs using EPS or similar? Or do you mean with a mudanza via boat?

I don't dare to buy electrodomestics in Plaza Lama because of the rumors that most of their stuff is refurbished.

We used to buy pampers and detergent at Pricesmart but for only these products it's not worth it while you have to pay 30 bucks yearly member fee.

Just about the only thing it is still cheaper to purchase here is Televisions and some automobiles. DR customs will not accept that a 32 inch TV costs $199 and they will still, against their own policy of not charging duty on items priced under $200, charge duty on all TVs that make it cheaper to buy an old model.

For other items door to door shippers work very well.

You know me personally and also know that I brought my 50" led TV into my home in Cabarete for around half of what it would have cost me compared to buying a comprable TV there.

Bringing a TV in yourself and having it brought in by a door to door shipper are very different when it comes to TVs.
Your results will vary each time you bring in the same item. With a door to door shipper you get a firm fixed price quote.

its the same bull**** in the states. I bought an unlocked new phone and went to have it hooked up the battery died in 1/2 hour. I pluged it in and it would not hold a charge. I wnet and bought a new battery and tired ot hook it up . The provider said something is wrong with the phone, its not giving them a signal I looked for the owners manual there was not one. I looked and you could see the phone was used and had been returned. I wanted a new phone, they did not have one. I asked for my money back and they credited my card but charge me a 15% restocking fee. I said for what a phone that you won't restock so I lost 60.00 on a POS phone. Never fry's again. It happens everywhere now a days. Their is no GOOD retailers anymore

i now equate pricesmart with bestbuy in canada. EVERY SINGLE item i ever bought there broke down and their return policies sucked.

i'm quite positive everything at bestbuy was refurbished, and i'm quite positive it's the same at pricesmart.

guess what just broke down today? my external harddrive. where'd i buy it? pricesmart.

no more, thank you.

i'll buy things that have nothing to do with electricity whatsoever.

We went to PriceSmart with our Inverter man, and they gave us all our cash back for the Washing Machine, even though we didn't have our receipt, warranty expired and no box or manual.
No way would they have given it back to us with out his help. All my business to do with inverters, batteries, and future solar panels will go to the awesome man who took his whole day out to help one of his customers out. Now that is Customer Service!

After we got our money we went around and bought lots at Pricemart, if the result was no return, we would have left and not gone back....or bought less..lol

Some how Pricesmart is the only place that I've seen that had big size HE detergent. Also both of my child (my son and wife) loves the Dole mixed fruit and tangerines. We also get few other household items, pet food and others in bulk but we still spend like $200-$400 for stuff. Pricesmart isn't cheap and I don't like shopping but I still fall for that big Frozen Cappuccino picture all the time.

Actually Price, Co. (the operators of PriceClub) merged with Costco in 1993. At the time, PriceClub was bigger than Costco but had fallen into second place behind Sam's Wholesale Club. PriceClub was the original wholesale warehouse club having first opened in the mid 1970s (owned by Sol and Robert Price). The merger didn't work out well and the Price's ended up starting Pricesmart in the late 1990s. They still own a large share of the company however Sol Price recently passed away. Robert is his son.

I know all this because when I first moved to Trinidad back in 2005 I was intrigued by the similarities of Pricesmart and Costco so I researched where Pricesmart originated. So in effect, Costco is a clone of Pricesmart.
