Two people shot by mistake
A shootout between four escaped inmates and prison guards from the San Felipe jail in Puerto Plata, yesterday, Monday 7 October, has left two local farm workers dead.
According to reports, they were shot by the prison officers who found them working in sugarcane fields near Barrabas in the municipality of Imbert.
The victims have been named as Ambiorix Vargas, a.k.a. Al Capone, and Emilio Pascual Jaquez. The agents initially said it had been a terrible mistake, but investigators subsequently stated that the two men had been involved in the inmates' escape plan.
The fugitives are Francisco Antonio Colon, serving 30 years for murder, Leonardo Quiroz Diaz, with still 20 years left of his murder sentence, Max Piter, who is serving 20 years for aggravated robbery and Nathanael Basilio Cruz who is serving five years for drug-related offences.
They pulled off their escape when an accomplice entered San Felipe jail and freed them at gunpoint. They are still on the run and are being sought by the Police.
