i don't want to crash this thread but i wonder if Merck has ever thought of the possibility of people "other than prostitutes" having AIDS ? i mean who is really a prostitute in the DR and who is not ?

She meant this post, but I don't take it as an insult to all Dominican women. After all, in every country in the world there are professionals and there are enthusiastic amateurs.

Please enlighten me but is this the most sarcastic study ever??
Are they really going to spray x-number of girls... some with a vaccine of which no one really yet knows if it works and some with some placebo. Now you know how bright these girls are... Are they ALL (the ones with the placebo too) going to think they are safe and have un-safe sex? Condomfree sex makes way more money. That's not just going to kill most of these girls but also creating an AIDS breeding machine until they do die.
I don't know if I misunderstood that one, but if that's what it is

... J-D.

The girls are all HIV negative. The vaccine has already been tested on animals followed by humans in phase 1 and 2. This trial is a phase 3 and the last which means it shows promise. We must remember this is still a trial and no cure or vaccine has been found that cures HIV. For those that are wondering if this is another example of dumping on third world countries, the trials are being done in many US cities along with some in Canada.

The fact that these girls are HIV negative means that so far they have done a good job in practicing safe sex. Some may not be bright but if the stay in this long program (4 years) they will probably learn more about the disease than most of us.

hmmm..what if this vaccine actualy is successful. Will it then be available to the DR, and other participating countries? and are they donating meds to people who are currently infected?

I am wary of a big drug company coming up with an actual vaccine. The are making a ton of money producing meds that just merely keep people alive (so why create a vaccine that the UN and world will or should demand be distributed universaly for free!).

Last year when i was in the DR...i noticed one of my friends wasnt as convivial as per his norm. A mutual friend told me he had the virus.

It blew my mind that he had nowhere to go for help...no access to meds etc. At first i was very sad....but then got quite I angry at the stigma and the lack of support he had. (and no...he's not the usual sex tourist worker...not that that should matter).

Here in the states..i hate to hear of someone with a new infection....but here it is hardly the end of the road. I know many people who are still healthy 20+ years.

Am i wrong thinking the carib nations are not in the crosshairs in the UN's and Global effort to fight AIDS....that the focus is in Africa and Asia...and the the carib is basicaly ignored ?

Something new?

Here in the states..i hate to hear of someone with a new infection....but here it is hardly the end of the road. I know many people who are still healthy 20+ years.

Do really believe that the drug companies are giving away these medications? Or, do you believe that the government is buying the drugs for the needy?

Only after years and years of diligent organizing in the non-profit sector have these medications become available to the average person in the States. Unfortunately I'm of an age that I remember how it was in the 1980's. It was a time when Ronald Reagan, in 8 years, never uttered the words HIV or AIDS and it was a time when the general public thought the disease was a 'gay thing'. Because of that stigma the drug companies didn't jump in to full scale research until the late 1980's and then after tens of thousands had died and hundreds of thousands were infected.

Now there are drugs that allow people to live realitively healthy lives for .... who knows how long, but these drugs cost upwards of $20,000USD a year per person and the world is much to interested in when Anna Nicoles body will decompose than they are in finding a way to provide these drugs to their sick brothers and sisters.

I forgot where I was going with this rant, I guess I don't find the subject matter humorous nor maybe I find tasteless jokes as ignorant now as I did 25 years ago.

Im confused. How can they study girls who are HIV negative?

well it goes like this:

they already have an idea of what % of prostitutes are now contracting the aids virus.

they take 600 girls who do not have the virus they give a blank pill or shot to half and they give their trial medicine to the other 300. None of the girls know which they are taking.....from there they go about their normal life like before the study...and they check all the girls periodically....and they check to see how many girls who are actually taking the blank pills get the virus over the course of the trial...they compare that to the number who get the virus who took the actuall vaccine or medicine....if the medicine doesnt work the percentage who get the aid virus would be equal in both groups.....they are hoping to see that that a significant % that were taking the actual medicine does not get the virus....which would lead them to believe the medicine is WHAT IS PREVENTING them from getting the virus.

the larger the group the more you can measure the results and elliminate bad luck in either group........

the blank pills are actaully called placebos I believe.

hope that helps

Pretty nice summary of what a double blind test is. And yes the blank pill is called placebo sometimes also known as a "sugar pill"

NOt at all do i believe drug companies are giving this stuff away. Either one has good health insurance...or you have to go on SDI. Either way...there is the theory that the big pharm co's dont want a real cure or as they make more money producing the cocktail drugs...and continue making money off the insurance companies and the govt and the UN.

Its kinda like dubbya preaching how the US is addicted to oil....yet we all know he IS big oil

But getting back to the DR focus of this thread....how exactly does merc plan on monitoring these subjects...and how do they compensate them?

I am by no means an expert on hiv..or hiv in the carib. But it would be interesting to hear more how people with HIV are treated in the DR.

On my last trip and seeing my friend there..i SWORE i would get involved with the clinton organization up in harlem that does a lot of HIV work globaly....and really wanted to bring some emphaisis on the Carib. (but i got lazy and complacent)

You want some answers to your question on monitoring and a bunch of other answers go to link.....and don't be lazy:cheeky:

I do not think that drug companies or big hospitals/doctors lobby will ever allow researchers to invent a treatment/cure for things like AIDS or cancer.
To kill their own favorite milking caw?!

Gimme a break!

Thousands and thousands of rich executives will lose their bread and fat butter if those maladies are exterminated!

After Working In "Medical Research"For Over 25 Years...

It "Warms My Heart"to see that "DR1"has so many self-proclaimed "Medical Reaserch Specialist"!!!!!!!! Not to say that there are not pleanty of "Abuses"in the ?ndustry",but most of the "Science"is sound, and the people involved are really trying, and "Succeding"to produce "MIRACLES"!!! Wonder if people like many of DR1's ?XPERTS"felt the same way about "Diabeties Research"as they do about "Aids RESEARCH"????

The vaccine MAY hopefully be effective... but again, what about those who think they MAY have the vaccine (an free ticket) and actually just got the placebo... the whole placebo thing is the pervert ingredient... they want to see how vaccine does compared to the ones who act similarly but do not have a chance... in other words D I E and contaminate a bunch of others before.
What I am trying to say, is that unless they receive the vaccine/placebos unbeknownst to them (they wouldn't know they are part of that test), their attitude and behavior will change. In other words their risk taking predisposition may become higher... which will make those who have the placebo more likely to contract the virus then those who are not participating in the "study".
One question I have also not yet found a clear answer to is, assuming the vaccine works (for the individual with it)... dose it prevent passing the disease on to others?

I cant believe company A is in cohoots with company B to keep company A in the money with their marginal medicines that Pro-long lives of patients, when company B might make billions producing a CURE...

who ever finds the cure will have the cash cow!!!!!!!!

they COMPETE against each other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

whenh someone makes a kick azz operating system tha blows microsoft out of the water...they wont go to microsoft and ask for a kick back not to make it...they will just make it and reap the rewards.

same for drug companies.... yeah the company that doesnt have a cure might try to convince doctors to keep using thier temporary relief drugs

but they cant hold back the company with a CURE

In A "Double Blind Study" There Is An ?UT"!

If it is apparent that the treatment works, the study is terminated, and the treatment is offered/given to everyone in the study!
To continue is unethical!

There are enough diseases out there to keep researchers busy for ever!
They don't do it for the money, they do it for the glory, and "Mankind"!

Just like "GM" bought the rights to an engine that gets 100 miles to the gallon to keep the developer from putting them out of business!!!
When we all know that it's TOYOTA that is doing that!
