I was just wondering if anyone would know how to get from Puerto Plata to Punta cana.
I've questioned this already with Caribe Tour and they said they do not go that far.
thanks

does Caribe Tour or Metro Bus go to Bavaro? I think one of those bus companies HAS to make it as far as La Romana or Higuey, that will put you at least 40 minutes away from your destination....from there maybe a cab or a personal driver will do! good luck!

Thanks, I will need to look into this further.
Carbie tour said they do not go to Higuey.
I don't mind the cab but its the metro bus that has me concerned, since I'll be travelling alone

hey! i just checked both sites for Caribe Tours and Metro and they do not go to the southeast....that stinks, i figured maybe some major bus company would go to some city along the way [Juan Dolio, San Pedro de Macoris, La Romana or Higuey]
not sure if you want to go the regular gua gua routes....especially if travelling alone.
good luck in any case, it is a long ride to make. i take it flying is out of the question? :/

because of Dominican politics these bus companies are not allowed to go to Bavaro. There used to be plane service but this has been suspended due to low numbers, TakeOff was the company offering flights on 9 to 28 seaters.

This is a 3 part, all day trip. Caribe Tours or Metro to Santo Domingo, taxi from there to the Bavaro Express parada and Then Bavaro Express bus to Punta Cana. Best to take one of the earliest buses from Puerto Plata if you want to arrive before dark.

Can definitely be done in one day, just a long day. POP - Sto Dgo : about 5 hours, Sto Dgo- Punta Cana : add 2 or 3 hours, plus taxi time and waiting in between. The buses are pretty safe, I prefer Metro always, cause Caribe Tours drivers can be rather reckless. The Bavaro buses are also pretty comfortable and decent. Count on RD $1000 more or less (I'm estimating very roughly based on Metro to Sto Dgo costs $270).

Spot on, except the trip from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana will probably be more like 3 1/2 to 4 hours. Count on 9 to 10 hours for the trip.

trip time

I recently did this trip from Rio San Jaun and it was 10 - 11 hours total. We left at 6:30 am and arrived at our hotel about 5 p.m and we were lucky in catching all transfers within half an hour of their departure times.Cost was in the $1,000 RD range

As noted above, traveling alone and a little concerned.

Do you realize that Rio San Juan is an hour and a half East of Puerto Plata? I'm thinking this must involve another bus change, either in PP or Sosua. Perhaps ybonabeach can fill us in on the specifics since he/she just made the trip.

What about driving? I remember hearing about a new highway from SDQ to Higuey. Would that help cut time if the OP had their own car?

From Rio San Juan, you could probably drive to Punta Cana in about 5 hours, taking the new toll road South from where it meets the N coast highway near Nagua. However, the cost of car rental, gas and tolls would be many times bus fare, and as we all know, driving in the DR is "not for everyone". If the OP is nervious about taking the bus, I can't imagine they would want to drive.

yes I will not be driving.
I just emailed Caribe Tour and they have no idea on how to get from one side of the island to the other. Their answer to me was to contact the Hotel that I will be staying at and they will more than likely now.

I would drive

2 years ago I drove from Santiago to PC. It was my first time driving in DR and it wasn't bad at all. It is all highway until you get to la Romana. If you try to do it using public transportation it will take you a very long time

1. Rio San Juan - Puerto Plata ( you will probably need to find a way to get from one parada to the other)

2. Puerto Plata - Santo Domingo (Caribe Tours leaves you on 27 de Febrero)

3. Take a taxi from 27 de Febrero to 31 Juan Sanchez Ramirez esquina Maximo Gomez

4. Get on the Bavaro Express Bus ( 7:00 10:00 14:00 16:00)

5. Take a taxi from the friusa stop to your hotel.

This is an ALL day trip. you would have to get going at around 5:00 am

you can also get a cab from Caribe Tours to Parque Enriquillo, take a bus to higuey and then take another bus to bavaro. I wouldn't recomend this. a few years ago I took a bus there to go to San Pedro and it was very confusing. I'm Dominican so it wasn't a language problem or anything It just wasn't very organized.

Since they don't go there, the person from CT who answered your email probably didn't know or care how you can get there. The parada (bus stop) in Rio San Juan is at the Texaco station on the highway. This is a 3 bus 3 taxi trip, and will indeed take all day.

Thank you all for your assistance. Obviously when I'm down there I will need to find my way to the other side of the island.
I truthfully do not mind the bus system, but its more for the route to take so this way I would feel more comfortable and sure of what to take and not have someone lead me estray.
