BORING!

Gotten pulled over once, for no placa. I was actually quite disappointed. My wife was driving that day, and after reading all of the horror stories here about the police, I was certain she would be arrested and detained. Alas, he just gave us a ticket, and sent us on our way. Next time, perhaps.

Which reminds me! I haven't paid that ticket yet. Do I just walk into Banco (whatever), had the cashier the ticket and then pay whatever amount they decide I should pay?

DRob and I got stopped in May by some guys who were stopping cars coming from both direction. I believe we were right outside of Nagua. And I don't know who these guys were with. Most had on uniforms, but the one who stopped us was in street clothing. So it was pretty clear to us that this was some sort of shakedown.

He kept asking for our papers. Accordingly, we instantly forgot all of the spanish we've learned over the years. And after about five minutes of "I'm sorry" and "Na Bla Espanish", the guy just waved us on.

I've never had a problem, been pulled over probably more than 20 times in a year and a half and they are always polite and friendly. The one time I did pay them was bc I did a U turn where it said not to and I had no problem with giving them pesos to be on my way.

I was nervous the other day when we were pulled over in Nagua bc we don't have all the proper paperwork for our car bc we just bought it but they didn't even ask for it.

Wow HR!

That must be a record. They seem to like you.
20 times in a year and a half is pretty good going.
I don't think I have that many stops in 5 and a half years and I drive every day.

They usually are OK except near holidays when they need money and make fake gringo-selective stops,( like in Sosua Abajo! Cost me a couple of grand in pesos just before Xmas).

The ones in military uniform are probably gun control, checking for unlicensed weapons carried.I don't have a gun so I've never had a problem with them.

We were stopped at that infamous near-Nagua roadblock too, I swear they go after the gringos, they spotted me a mile away. They were visibly surprised when Mr. AE started speaking Spanish to them. He leaned in and shook my husband's hand while asking where we were heading. The one on my side never opened his mouth. Told us to have a nice day and we were on our way.

When we shipped our car down, the first thing we did was have the driver and passenger windows tinted dark [an astonishing 500 pesos, I was pleasantly surprised], so they can't see us as easily.

We drive A LOT and far distances...

Our old car we had tinted windows and looked like a cab (toyota corolla) not sure if they pulled us over more bc of that?

Pulled Over by Amet and set free about an hour ago in front of the Texaco just past the Hoyo for not wearing my seatbelt. The Amet Cop was huge about 6.6 and 290 or so pounds.. I told him I was in a rental car, and immediately reached to give him a 200 peso note. He waved his finger at me "no no". Asked for my DL, which is Canadian.

He said I give you one opportunitad and let me go!! I said to him, tu eres bueno persona, tu eres numero uno!

I though after all of the threads I've read on here about getting pulled over and all the nightmare scenarios I was going to be in for a rough time.. But this guy wouldn't even take a propina and he let me go, no ticket..

Amet Rocks Baby!! At least in Fruisa...

He didn't ask you to date his sister who is 6'3" 250? Are you sure?
