I called La Sirena. I was told the prices are follows for Sealy mattresses and that Grupo Ramos only imports queen and full

full Rd15,000

queen 16,000+

The guarantee is only 5 days surprisingly. The good local made mattresses have guarantees of 5 years or so. Still I expect the Sealy's are better built.

Speaking of stoves and fridges, go to Radio Centro on Estrella Sadhalla. They are major distributors to businesses and sell directly to the consumer too. You can get a good GE stoves for RD27-35k if I remember correctly. You can also get a decent lesser quality for one around RD20k with probably a guarantee for 6 mos to a year.

Thanks Chip. I could have sworn I saw cheaper prices at Super Pola.

Speaking of living here in lovely Santiago, I would recommend getting one of the local washing machines instead of the big American type ones because they use a lot less power at least from my experience. I saved over US10 for an incomplete month after I bought a Samsung 7 kg for RD11,200 at Corripio.

Also, if you plan on having ac please be aware the power is charged here on a sliding scale with the rates as follows:

kwh usage Rate(RD)
0-200 4.44
201-300 6.97
301-700 10.86
701+ 11.1

For my two story house I run around 320 kwh a month. I have everything connected to the inverter but I don't leave the water pump on all day long. We have 5 fans and 28 lightbulbs(bajo consumo), tv's microwaver, toaster and a shower type hotwater heater and my bill runs around RD2000 a month. Assuming you have the same but you want to have ac on say 8 hours a day and you have a 12,000 BTU unit your bill would run around RD11,000. 1 BTU = 0.000293 kwh

Most people here cut them on in the late evening just for a couple of hours. Santiago is at over 600 feet above sea level plus we have a cool mountain breeze 99% in the evening on our side of town. I expect you will see that you don't need the ac on a whole lot. I don't have it and I'm a gringo but then again I grew up in SC without ac for many years and it makes Santiago look like the North Pole during the summer.

Assuming your house power consumption is less than mine (quite possible as no one want to cut off the lights) and you use the ac only 2 hours a night the power bill could be around RD2900 a month.
