Haitian music has been heavily influenced by the groups of African living there : Congolese, Ibos, Yoroubas, Benin etc it is not the way around...Soukouss is a by-product of the rumba Congo style played in the 50s by people like Franco ( Luambo Makiadi) which evolves to Soukouss ( Alain Kounkou, Aurlus Mabele etc) to Ndombolo ( Werrason, Koffi Olomide etc). The Congo rumba was influenced by the Cuban rumba ( remember that many Congolese were deported to Cuba, Benny More or Arsenio Rodriguez had Congolese ancestry)... According to many musicians scholars like Fradique Lizardo or Ned Sublette, the Dominican merengue appeared during the Haitian occupation of the Spanish side ( came from the Haitian Meringue)... The rhythm of the Dominican merengue drums can be heard in Angola and Congo and others Bantus regions ( see Ned Sublette)...So merengue comes from Haiti...

The perico ripiao played by tatico henriquez is highly influenced by Congolese rhythms, because from the 17th century to the 19 the century most of the slaves deported in Santo Domingo came from the Congo region ( sold by the Portuguese), the tambora used in merengue is from the Nigeria region ( ibos), the way they play accordion ( call and response is African) and even many more are related to African music ( like the Dominican palos).
