Cooki Silvario (spelling?) head of the Playa Dorada Hotel owners assocation, came up with the bone headed idea of charging each vehicle RD50 to enter Playa Dorada. This charge is to fix the roads and common areas inside Playa Dorada.
In a heated meeting with tour operators, excursion providers, and taxi unions, these entities complained that these charges would be very difficult to implement for companies which would have to pay twice to pick up and drop off hotel guests. for some companies this will cost thousands of dollars month.
It also sets a bad precedent, will Cofresi, RIU Maimon, Costambar, follow suit?
Apparently there many problems yesterday when they started charging private vehicles.
It does not surprise me, this is the same guy who was in charge of 'fixing' the roads in Puerto Plata and had to be removed from the job, after 15 months of idiotic construction where 10 miles of road were repeatedly dug up, left alone for weeks soemtimes months at a time (after everyone dipped into the funds), filled, dug up again (often leaving no way for people to get from one side of the town to the other - for days!). Sometimes they worked just during rush hour.
The restaurants and bars inside the PD complex must love his new idea but my guess is it wont' last more than two weeks. They might be able to extort some money from business via monthly fees though. thugs, nothing but modern highway robbery - LITERALLY.
