Arriving soon and being a keen fresh water fisherman, i wonderd if any one can tell me what types of fresh water fish there are in the D.R and how big do they grow to?

Thanks Ian

Have personally caught 6-8# bass in two of the resevoirs (San Juan de la Maguana and Maimon areas....but there are no guides...you have to have it "all figured out" before you just show up on the scene to fish. These are not tourist areas. The closest you come to "fresh water" fish of any consequence would be snook which you can find in tourist areas (POP/La Romana)and there are no guides here as well....you would have to get a local fisherman to set you up.

There is also supposed to be lake trout in San Juan but have not personally caught nor seen any.

Best, Dave

Just little guys in DR

Rec carp or Lake carp grow to 40 pounds in Lake Erie here in Canada, creeks abound with them in the summer, junk fish up here.

There is excellent Bass fishing the resevoirs as you say. Any fairly proficient bass fisherman should be sucessful in fishing these areas. I have fished these bodies of water from the shore, small boat and even inner-tube.

The river Ozama and Haina are both great Snook and Tarpon fishing areas. Particularly the upper Ozama.

I have heard of some particularly wealthy individuals stocking some of the highland streams with Trout but I have seen no evidence of this. If they have, the locals probobly decimate them before they get established. Could you just imagine some of the streams near Jarabacoa and Constanza with trout? Paradise!!!
As for Red Carp. I know that some europeans consider it a delicacy but then they liked ABBA. At best it is a trash fish better suited as fertilizer!

Snook sure do...and Tarpon is one of....

....the greatest fresh/saltwater gamefish in the world.

I ate a large Trout caught in the Hatillo Dam near Cotui that was a foot long and must have weighed about 1 1/2 pounds. It also tasted great

Actually Smoked tarpon is quite good. But Tarpon is basically a catch and release Game fish. Carp is not in anyway a game fish. Their fight is like pullng a sack of potatoes.

Are you sure it was a Trout? The waters in that area are way too warm for salmonedes(Trout Family). In most cases anything above 70 degrees is lethal. Now I know there is plenty of largemouth bass there.

Trouche is trout is it not? It would not say that it is Rainbow Trout but it certainly looks like it.
