Had a rental problem in Italy with my DR license after using Hertz over 20 years, lady asked for an International license WHAT ...???
After my return I looked it up realized these are only nice looking translations with an expiration date so you always need a new one, so I figured we make our own and let me tell you, they look better than the original ones (and without expiration). Let me know if you need ones.

I know a guy here for 30 years, no license. I got him an International license and Digest accepts it. But it has to be in date. You can actually get one good for 10 years online but it will cost about $300. I have one myself for renting cars in some Countries. But you also need a regular license with it, which I have..............And please I don't want to hear how it is NOT a license to drive. I know that already......................

I was just curious what countries needed it for that.

If you’re travelling abroad and plan to drive in that country, International Driving Permits are often recommended and sometimes legally required.

International Driving Permits (or ‘IDPs’) are accepted alongside a valid Canadian driver's licence in well over 100 countries, and failing to produce one when required can result in a substantial fine.

For example, you’ll need an International Driving Permit in India, and an International Driving Permit in Japan, as well as many European destinations.

This guide will help you find which countries you need an IDP for, and where and how you can attain one.

SKY, interesting scam. Thanks for the info. Since the only license I have is from the DR, not Canada or the USA or any other place, I automatically assume
this IDP will be simple to get. ;)

So it, looks like the IDP MUST be obtained through the local motor vehicle department where you have a license.
Just like your link shows for Canadians. Perfect, or maybe not... Since this of course is the DR.

NOTE: Other methods to get an IDP are allegedly fraudulent, but will they care in Cucamonga? Or Germany? So thanks to DR1'rs that can produce them
at home using the latest AI software, of course, those may or may not work.

In the DR this office to get an IDP to drive other places where one is required to rent a car and/or drive would be INTRANT.

A quick search did not provide a simple way, or indeed any way to get an IDP here, what a surprise. o_O

But I can request special headlights, a double trailer permission, or even something to do with the Wuhan Flu is still up there.

I can tell you that if I don't pass the next test in 2025, I will continue to exist without a license.

It is probably the most useless ID I have in my wallet.
I have no horse in this race. However, what would an insurer think about a driver that had a "god forbid" major major accident that didn't have a license? Or, the surviving family in a CIVIL LAWSUIT??

JD: You could move that queston to legal forum if you want.

I have been waiting for this answer for while. I even asked my insurance agent in Cabarete , who insures people that live here full time with no DR licenses or legal residency, what would happen to them if they had a serious accident from day 31 on after they re-enter the DR on tourist cards.

And she has refused to answer. Twice.

Anecdotally people have said their insurance has always paid when they had accidents despite the lack of a DR license and being illegal aliens. For what that is worth. Drive on, I guess. No worries.

So it's a scam you say.................

Planning to rent a car and venturing out into the world on your own? Plan to obtain an International Driving Permit before you go.

AAA is one of only two private entities in the U.S. authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue an IDP.*

SKY --- An IDP from AAA for a Dominican Driver's license? That would be "Fascinating" ...

Oh wait, your links says a valid US driver's license...

So, back to INTRANT which would be the only legal way to get an IDP with a DR driver's license.
If they even have a way....

All of my major assets are outside of the country. If my "seguro de ley" doesn't work for them, they're out of luck.

Truth be told, I'm not too worried about getting my license renewed.
And, I hardly drive at all any more, and certainly not at any great speed.
99% of accidents here are avoided by moving slowww.

Post # 71 clarifies the differences between having assets outside the DR and attachable assets in the DR. This would be an important part of my question that I overlooked. In my case it is simple. I have a Ga. license and car insurance on my car in Ga. I have my car here in the DR registered and insured here in my "wife 's " name. I don't personally drive here in the DR. I do not have a DR lic. nor do I have any reason to obtain one.

If you never drive in the DR, what is the reason for the question?

Your US/GA license is valid here for 30 days after you enter. Your GA insurance on a car there is not relevant here.

Your wife appears to own, be licensed to drive and is insured properly in the DR.

I am not sure what else you are asking about.

My question was directed to JD who stated he would under certain conditions drop renewing his lic. Then the convo went from there.

Winde see post #54
Understood.

I cannot exist without a license since I drive in the DR and when I travel. If I am in the car, I prefer to be the one driving. The only license I hold for driving is the DR one. It was the main reason I started legal residency and was approved before I left the USA for good. California for some reason would not continue to renew my license....

When I said I wasn't worried about renewing, I meant to say I don't foresee a problem for me to renew. Obviously, I would like to be in possession of a valid license because it's the right thing to do for driving in the US as Windy mentioned.
The only reason I would be rejected is for my sight as I get older.

Here, like in the USA, if you cannot pass the DR vision test without glasses, you'll get a condition on your licenses that you must wear your glasses while driving. As long as you are not "legally blind" you should be able to renew your DR license even if your sight is not 20/20.

With red light running a big problem, can you imagine Digisett asking where your glasses are?
