Renting a car in the DR

I rented a car 2x in DR this month. You have to drive like you do in Los Angeles. Don't put on the brake, just pull out to pass and everyone moves over a little

A_andy ....you say "Don't under any circumstances rent a car"but "buy a motorclycle"???? Come on andy....renting a car is no big deal there....but to send the guy in the direction of buy a moto.....Personally I think that is bad advice.
If you are a good driver and have driven in big cities....such as New York, Philly,or even Toronto, driving is not a big deal down there. I've driven many times...yes you have to keep your eyes open, but same goes for anywhere. If you are a good driver and are a comfortable driver in chaotic conditions....you'll have no problems! I've driven a car and a large motorbike in downtown SD and have had no problems.
If you come from the countrie and a traffic jam is three cars at the intersection...then no don't, but if you are used to driving in the big cities...then don't worry about it...but keep alert!

You've heard the testimony about being given defective cars, insurance not paying, complications even if rear-ended, etc. I said that one should hire a driver when a car is needed.
There is also good bus transportation for those knowledgeable and who speak a little Spanish.
Concerning motorcycles, I emphasized the danger, even that one might end up in the hospital or morgue. I said that it should be considered for the courntryside only and by experienced riders. It opens a whole new world of exploration and getting to meet the people. Remember that I'm not talking about 500 lb monsters like in the U.S. but the 200 pounders like the conchos use. I mentioned buying a motorcycle because it can be done, and resold, quite easily (unlike in more bureacratic countries).
When I started going to the DR I could scarcely ride a bicycle, but I eventually saw the light. I've had many spills, but nothing serious. At 15 mph on soft dirt it is not so bad. And the cows that hit you usually don't demand money.
Why do people go to the DR? What does it have that other places dont't? AN OPEN SOCIETY WITH HOSPITABLE PEOPLE.
It seems to me that those who stay in the big hotels in tourist areas miss what the DR is all about.
