Out of curiousity I went on Trip Advisor and read around 25-30 reviews of Rockys, and it seems that Tona533741 IS THE ONLY ONE THAT FEELS SLIGHTED. THE MAJORITY HAVE HAD THE OPPOSITE EXPERIENCE.

Let me say this I have experienced real racism, from the man who told me he doesn't do business with n-----s, to the cops who stopped me on the street because I fit the description of a criminal who was 6'2(I'm 5' 10"). Trust me when I say that if I feel I have been subjected to racism I am the first to shout the warning. It sounds to me as if Rick's tone of voice and manner was taken as racism. I know that many times I sound condescending to certain people it's not that I'm racist against white people, I just don't like stupid.

Perhaps my intent was unclear, the intent of my post was to say that Rick is not racist that perhaps like many of us he doesn't do well with stupid.
I think calling racism when none exists is harmful and causes even more problems.
If someone has issues with Rick's service then deal with them face to face and let him correct them, he is first and foremost a businessman who wants happy customers, that doesn't mean he has to roll over for you.

During slavery, no slave owner considered themselves racist, they were just doing business.
They were many arguments on why a slave owner was not racist.

Hey, Treat me properly and you receive respect, my fellow earthlings.

You've had a enough to drink for one day............
Get some sleep, and when you wake up, reread your posts...........
Then look in a mirror and ask yourself............
Am I nuts..............or what............

Some might be offended by this post due to the history of lynching; just as a Jew might be offended by a Death Camp joke. I on the other hand just consider it a comment made by someone on a board that tries just a little to hard to be funny for my taste.
People have and always will be offended by certain comments (some comments actually are objectionable), however the difference now is that we no longer duel on the streets which has lead undoubtedly to a less civilized atmosphere.

I had a very bad experience with Rocky's Bar.
I personally believe he mistreated due to the color my skin.
I told him and he brushed it off. His staff didn't even replace the bathroom essentials daily.
I had to complain. He hides his racism very well.

Apparently he hides his racism so well that you seem to be the only person who is able to perceive it. Just because a business owner doesn't treat you as well as you would like doesn't mean he has a problem with your race. He may simply have a problem with >>you<<. From your posts, it sounds like he has good cause not to want you as a customer. If any other owner in Sosua were to see your posts, they wouldn't want you as a customer either. Rocky's has always been one of the most welcoming spots in Sosua, which is one more reason why it's one of the longest lasting bars in town. Sosua is a small town and what gets around comes around. You may find yourself unwelcome anywhere in town once the other owners know you are.

Getting back to the history of Rocky's, I vaguely remember a story that Marco got his start in Sosua by trucking fresh tomatoes into Sosua when they were otherwise not available. Then, at some point, he started a smaller version of Rocky's one or two doors down from its current location and moved to the current site maybe 13? years ago. Back then, the rooms were all of $12.50/night. Rick bought Marco out a few years back and Marco helped with the transition, which helped to carry over the client base. Rick has been working to upgrade the place every since.

What was Rocky's before Marco took it over?

I notice in the OP that they talk about The Oasis being a hang-out for the German Ex-Pats and tourists. Sosua has always been a blend of tourists and ex-pats from different countries, but it's really only in the last ten years that it's been "discovered" by Americans. When I was first there in '93, I remember almost all Canadians on the beach and that the bars in El Batey were almost all German owned, with the possible only exception of Eddy's, which I believe was the biggest bar in town at the time and the only place that had satellite TV(with GIANT dishes). If you didn't speak Spanish or German, it was often hard to bridge any language barrier.

I was staying in Los Charimicos at the time and at night, you could go down to the beach and drink at the handful of bars down there. I don't think there were gift shops back then. Some were lit by candle light, and the ones closest to Los Charimicos were lit by a string of Christmas tree lights. Cold beer was hard to get on the beach, so most places just sold Cuba Libres or bottles of rum. I don't think ice was an option.

I first found Rocky's in 2000 and tried to get a room as a walk-in, but they were booked for the night. Marco made a phone call and got me a room at the Romanoff for the same rate I would have paid at Rocky's and then gave me a ride there with my luggage. The only people I met who spoke fluent English on that trip were at Rocky's (and Tropix, which I stayed in briefly a month beforehand), and that was just 12 years ago. Times have changed.

Not sure where everyone is but allow me to show this guy the exit door.

Thank you so much Anna. This Tona guy unfortunately has a screw loose. He once said in a previous post in this thread that I was blind. I think it is he who is blind and only sees racism because his eyelids are closed to all other possibilities.

He has done me damage with the black community because of his failure to see the truth but I am sure, with time... I shall recover. His posts here will definately help with that.

People see what they want to see and when I read his first post, I just finished having breakfast with 5 black friends at Rocky's at the "Captain's Table"

Imagine that Tona. Why would a racist choose to have breakfast with 5 black friends if he were racist. WOW, please rethink where you first felt this feeling with me and then, ask yourself... was I right now knowing the true facts? Not in this lifetime my friend.

Take care all and thank you all for your continued support... Whether you are black, brown, yellow, or green, you are always welcome at Rocky's Bar in Sosua. The "Cheers" of Sosua!

Take care,

Rick
