I JUST EMAILED THAT PERSON AGAIN TO ASK ABOUT CLEANLINESS AND SHE WROTE BACK SAYING IT WAS VERY CLEAN AND THAT THEY (THE MAIDS) EVEN FOLDED THEIR DIRTY LAUNDRY EVERYDAY! SHE SAID MAYBE IT DOES DEPEND ON THE WAY YOU TREAT THEM. BUT SHE HAD NO PROBLEMS. I GUESS BE NICE AND FRIENDLY WHEN YOU GET THERE AND THEY WILL DO THE SAME TO YOU??!!

I read the negative review at Debbie's and will give my frank response.

It sounds as if there are problems in the buildings which were just completed. We were in one of the buildings at the south end of the property and had no problems with electricity, etc. The screen door to the balcony would come off. There is a design problem with the frame. Our room was extremely clean every day and we had no bugs at any time except for one mosquito. We asked for and receive extra water for the mini-bar. So no complaints there. We've been to several different Sandals and have booked premium rooms. I think the accomodations at RUA were superior to Sandals, and we had the standard suite at RUA.

The common areas of the resort are terrific and the physical setting is beautiful. I noticed some trash on one area of the beach, off property. Let's face it, live in the DR, go to the beach, and leave trash.

Now for the food and service. Neither my wife or I are big wine drinkers, so I can't really opine on the availability of various wines. We did have wine a couple of nights, it was spanish, and was good. One the other hand, the bars are fully stocked with premium brands or liquor and I had no problem getting a Beefeater's martini, or a Bailey's after dinner.

Table service was very uneven. One night it was great in the Italian and another it was bad, because the waiter who took our order, left to help at another location and didn't put in our order. Once our lack of food was brought to the attention of the remaining wait staff, we were promptly taken care of.

We ate late (9 p.m.) and several nights certain entrees were no longer available. One night we couldn't get into one restaurant, because it was full, with people waiting, and it was 10 p.m.

Summary-Based on our experiance, the physical facilities are six stars, the staff was very friendly and tried to be very helpful. Everything I ate was very good, but the choices on some occasions were limited. Table service overall was substandard for a six star resort, which I would hope will be corrected through experiance and training.

We leave tomorrow morning. I guess I'm starting to look forward to it again. After I reread that review it seems that if I was put in some of those circumstances, I probably would laugh and not freak out. So, I go with an open mind. Will report to you when I return.

I am going there for 2 weeks for my long awaited honeymoon in the beginning of June, my parents are going as well in April for 1 week. This place is supposed to be amazing! I am not worried at all. Everybody has their own opinions. That is the only bad one that I have heard since the resort opened in December. From what I have heard the thing to keep in mind the most is the language barrier. On Debbies website she has a page that you can print out of most common used Spanish words and phrases. Were are you flying from?

I previously read about the slow service and the language barrier and as long as I knew that may be a problem it was OK. My travel agent told me that because the resort is new it does take some time to "iron out the kinks". And it will take some time for the staff to "pick up" some of the English language. Before reading the latest bad review I was thinking of changing hotels because I received no response to 2 e-mails I sent.I felt that there may be a customer service problem. Now that I've read the review I am very concerned about the customer service. Also, the fumigating of the property, for me, is an issue. Friends of ours just returned from the Paradisus and there was no fumigating at all. I can't figure out why one hotel would need fumigating and the other doesn't. She also said that there too was a language barrier but there were some staff who could speak English and the service was definitely 6 star.

I know that many people have different opinions and expect different things while on vacation. Maybe the bad review was from a competitor, but I don't think so. I felt that she as being very honest.

Although the property and the beach seem absolutely beautiful, service is very important to us. It would definitely put a damper on our vacation if we couldn't communciate with anyone and if we were treated poorly as stated in the bad review.

We are going at the end of the June and maybe by then the "kinks will be ironed out". My travel agent is going to find out about the fumigating and in the meantime, I will keep reading the reviews. If there are any more bad reviews, we will probably change hotels.

Some people go on vacation and remember the negatives...some people only remember the positives.
Go with an open mind....take a deep breath and live on Dominican time for a week! You'll have the time of your life!

My wife and I recently returned home from a week at the RUA. I just read the reviews that were posted on Debbie's Dominican Republic page while we were gone. As I read the long, negative, review from the person signed "Canada" I had to wonder if they were at the same wonderful resort. The impression we received of the staff were that they were always willing to please in any way possible. Never once did we make a request that was not honored. We were warned by our Apple rep to get accustomed to "Dominican time." Which, according to her, is one USA/Canadian minutes to thirty Dominican. But we never witnessed any of the staff acting on "Dominican time." Any request made was honored in a complete and efficient manner; and it always came with a smile. The Dominican Republic people we encountered were extremely friendly and cheerful. They are a beautiful people in all ways.

The food was consistently good. The group that we ended up spending most of our time with joked about the dinners sometimes being mixed up when they were placed on our table, but we were more pleased with the opportunity to try lots of different foods. If there is one thing that needs to be adjusted, it may be the menus that made for some interesting translations from Spanish to English. But we all agreed that we would gladly provide our services of correcting the written translations for a free weeks stay!

The language barrier was seldom a challenge. We know very little Spanish, and never had a problem. The key staff spoke very good English. The housekeeping staff was much more limited in their English skills, but still knew more of the language than staff we've dealt with in large cities, like Chicago. It is important to keep in mind that we are North Americans traveling to a foreign country. It is a bit pompous for us to think that everywhere we go in the world English should be the primary language spoken. It is not the norm in Paris, Madrid, Moscow or Berlin (and especially Quebec), so why is it expected in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic? We never witnessed or experienced preferential treatment provided to someone based on nationality or language skills.

The assessment of the topless sunbathing in the review was most interesting. There was no topless sunbathers at the main pool the entire time we were at the RUA. In fact, there were very little at the topless pool. On occasion, women would be topless at the beach. The entire crowd must have turned over within the short time difference from the reviewers departure and our arrival, because the act of people trying to tear each others tops off would have been extremely uncharacteristic of the mature (ages 30 - 55)almost entirely couples crowd at the resort (and are they absolutely positive that they were Americans?).

We witnessed no fumigation being done during our stay. No doubt some must have taken place, because there were very few bugs anywhere. In fact, we never used the insect repellant that we brought. It wasn't needed. Knowing the layout of the bathroom and shower area, I am having difficulty determining how the reviewer did not notice a spider in the shower. Especially one the size that was described. Being in a tropical area, we would have found it interesting to see an insect of that size. But we never saw anything larger than a common beetle that was outside the door of the disco after a brief rain shower.

The grounds were impeccably kept. I strolled around to take picture one morning, and after a dozen or so photos I realized that all of the pictures included the staff cleaning, pruning or watering. I was most impressed by the cleanliness of the beach. Every morning a hoard of staff must have descended on the beach because there was never a piece of seaweed or trash. If you left the resort property one could see the amount of trash that washes up. But on the RUA property, the beach was beautiful and clean.

Obviously people experience similar things differently. For some, small items can seem large, which then turns larger items into mountains. It is all in our perception of the world. Our perception of the Royal Uvero Alto is that it is one of the finest establishments we've had the pleasure to experience. Most impressive is the fact that they have only been open a short time. Having personally created and experienced many large projects from inception to production, I am extremely impressed that such a complex operation is functioning at such a high level after such a short period of time. A most impressive facility that we would highly recommend.

Response to Nancy

WE were there in February. I witnessed fumigating twice in the early evening. It was one worker with a blower and it took 2 minutes around our building. Since we were on the 2nd floor, the only inconvenience was the noise for a couple of minutes.

My husband and I spent a week March 11-18. Steve's observations are right on the mark. Our vacation goal was to veg out and not have to wake up early to reserve a shady spot. We scouted out a place each morning @ 10 and had no difficulty securing a shady hut. A little tricky around the pool but alot of people obviously setting towels out and not planning to return until later in the day. ( always maddening ) We could easily find shade and privacy on the beach go to lunch and come and find another shady and private spot. We estimate too that the resort was half full and we too were at the south end. No fumigation concerns - we were aware twice and yes it was noisy and strong smelling but a necessity I'm sure. There were a few gliches in service etc. but nothing spoiled our vacation. We knew we were taking our chances by visiting a new property. We had no interest in activities, the guests during our stay seemed to be aged between late 20's to late 60's. If you are looking for a vacation and want to be on the go and to see all the sights you might be disappointed but other than that I'm sure you will enjoy your time there.

I agree, David hits it right on the mark. We just returned Wednesday from a week of perfection. No one should hesitate the least bit to visit this resort. I was very skeptical before leaving but am soooo glad I didn't change my plans.
The only thing that I will add is that we also experienced fumigation twice while there. They explained to us that after it rains the mosquitoes sometimes come. I got 4 bites the whole week and am the type that gets bitten alive whether I have repellant on or not. When they fumigated we were in our room and waited a little while for it to be over. The other time we were walking to go to dinner and put it off for half an hour having a drink in the indoor restaurant till the man was done. I compare this spray to something like the outdoor yard spray sold in cans. He had a huge sprayer on his back and by the way wore no mask. If you have any questions just e-mail me. Eleni
