From reading this thread, I bought a bottle of Barbancourt 8 year (5 star). Cost was $26 for a 750mL. Really great stuff, straight or mixed.
Picked up another bottle near work, $19 , best value in the store. I will liberate a couple of more bottles to fulfill their destiny.
Lonely, lonely on the display shelf was a single bottle of Barbancourt 15 year, $45. To those who have drank both, is the 15 year really worth double the price?

In a word Yes. Drink it in a Brandy Snifter straight.

Good News - Bad News

So, I left POP yesterday.
Good News - the duty Free has Leyenda
Bad News - $30US... not the $20 (900 pesos) I pay a fuera......

The staff knows the price is bad - not their fault.

How idiotic is that ? The RD pricing mentality?

Yes, I bought it..........anyway !!

Duty free is a mith/scam today...
In POP is the worse of all. Brugal Siglo de Oro at the Brugal Factory is 62$ at POP airport is 140$.. unbelievable...
but other airports are similar though..
at JFK for example a bottle of zacapa 23 is 68$ while I usually pay for it 43$ in my regular store in NY.

I am a Rum afficionado.. I have bottles from all over the place.. I actually brought a lot of them in my new place in Sosua and displayed in a nice piece of furniture custom created.
In my sipping collection:
- Diplomatico Single vintage 2000 ( one of the best rums in the world) and a bottle that is no longer available in stores
- Diplomatico Ambassador ( 350$ bottle)
- Zacapa XO
- EL Dorado 21 years ( another that makes the list of one of the best in the world)
- Appleton Estate 30 years old
- Plantation XO

I have to say though that definetely the Leyenda is probably the best in quality/price.
At the brugal headquarter in Puerto Plata is sold for 15$ a bottle... excellent price for such a beautiful product

Try the Zaya , dany....

Right price & quality
We agree on Leyenda......:rambo:

Thank you WW but Zaya is actually a bad version of the Zacapa 23. I don't know if you know it but it is produced by the same company that produces the Zacapa with pretty much all the leftovers of the solera that are not good eough to make the Zacapa 23...
I am not saying is not good but there much better stuff around. Thank you though...

I do freely admit I am a bad transplant. In my vast drinking experience, everybody has something that is poison. For my nephew Dan, it is vodka; for my cousin Pat, it is tequila. For me: it is rum.

Mala suerte. I live in one of the best rum places in the world, and it is not a good idea for me to drink it.

We, who are born and raised on the East coast of Canada, on a piece of granite out in the North Atlantic (Newfoundland) are introduced to the pleasures of rum at an early age. I have childhood memories of pigging out on my grandmothers Xmas fruit cake which was soaked in rum and wrapped in cheese cloth for a month prior to eating. One of our favourite desserts is Partridge Beery parfait. Layers of cream, partridge berrys ( also known as Cloud berrys) and a dash of Screech rum. Another is trifle, British in origin, a mixture of custard, cake, and fruit of your choice, and we add a dash of rum.

Rum runners thrived in our province during Prohibition. Schooners laden with rum from St.Pierre (a French island twelve miles off our south coast) would head to Maine and drop off their cargo in hidden coves. We also profited from the rum trade to the islands. Our vessels laden with salt cod would catch the trade winds and head to the Carribbean to off load and return with rum.

Don't deprive yourself of one of life's great pleasures. Savour it in desserts. I also like Tequila but it doesn't mellow me out like rum. I tend to get a bit rambunctious. Sort of like the Bonnie Raitt tune, " Getting drunk on tequila and married down in Mexico".

Didn't last long ...........

Experiment....

Remembering here, I am trying a 'walk on the wild side'

Bought the Brugal XV...... gracias Dorota

Adjusted it with some honey (over flame) and vanilla
attempting to imitate the Lleyenda...

Not bad !!!

Mix'n match, as they say.

Poor man's rich rum....

suits me to a 'T'............

just a mixology experiment.

I can't get much in Canada or US... so I concoct.

Most rum tastings comment on sweetness, vanilla flavor..... so I tried it.

not bad..
but at my advancing age, I water everything down.... wine, rum....

But I like your idea of the name.....hahaha

William, just an advise.. In Canada ( not in the US) you should be able to find Rum Millonario XO. it's considered one of the best in the world.. Since you like Leyenda you should like this as well since it's on the sweeter side.. It should be around 70$ per bottle
