if you need to ask about it you do not know enough about DR to move here with a small child. 900 dollars a month is a pitiful budget for 3 people as well unless you want to live in a barrio and eat rice and beans every day. stay where you are and look into coupons and food stamps.

Can anyone provide any new updates on this topic. We are relocating to the Dominican Republic in late June with a 6yr old child and I need to know the safest city/town to live in. We are open to anywhere as long as it is safe and we can easily get to stores as we will not have access to a car for some time while we save. (We will be relocating from the U.S.) Budget is under $900 USD. Thanks so much. Also, any suggestions on where to purchase furniture, a good household items shipper and anyone to ship snub nosed dogs?

The Airlines are worried after a few law suits brought when doughs died from heat conditions in the cargo hold. The correct term for snub nosed dogsis bechycephalic(sp). Dogs with these short faces sometimes have breathing difficulties especially in warm weather. All dogs are heat sensitive as the do not sweat thru their skin, only via their respirations and foot pads. As far as 900 a month do not move here as security will not be an issue so much as starvation. I think Sosua is very safe and I would place more stock in the opinions of people living here than in any government numbers. The government is for the most part completely corrupt and incompetent. Sosuaisa lovely town with easy access to most things you will need. Best of luck.

I think some of you guys assume too much, did he say that 900 a month is fix income he'll received from outside the county once here? or is that going to be what he expects to live off working in DR? if the second is your scenario then I would advise you to stay away from DR, but if it's the first scenario then I think is doable. Like I said, if you're getting 900 a month unconditionally, then you guys could try to find work on your fields or maybe online, again I'm assuming a lot myself since you gave us very little info to work with. Anyways, lets just assume both of you start working at a call center, in which each one will start making 800 a month, then your combine income will be 2500$. A decent 2 bedroom apartment in my neck of the woods Gurabo, Santiago (a very decent and safe zone of the city) will come out to 200-250 a moth, plus another 200-250 for a decent private school for your kid, that will leave you with about 2000 for everything else. You wont certainly live like a millionaire, but I doubt you'll starve like some here have mentioned, or live in "poverty".

Again this is just me assuming a bunch of things, but none of us knows what your situation is, and DR could be better than what you currently have.

It's not hard to spend $100/month just on motos per person in Sosua and that's not including trips to POP. If you live in the center and try to get around by walking, the rents are going to be higher(and it's going to be much louder). 300 pesos a day for food pp is tight, and that's doing all your cooking at home with little meat. Figure $50-$100/month pp just on drinking bottled water unless you want to spend your days at home drinking from a 5 gallon jug. Lots of little things will cost $3-$5 a day and it all adds up.

Ex pats tend to steer clear of people who are helpless, broke, and won't last. You have nothing to offer them and can't easily socialize on a shoestring budget. "Want to meet at Brittania later? Oh right, you're broke...."

$1800/month for a family of three would be considered tight. If you can't afford that, don't try to move to the DR. Bringing a dog on that budget is lunacy, much less a kid.

Perhaps I should have elaborated a it more....

I guess I should have elaborated a little more and I would not have gotten some of the nasty remarks below. We were HOPING to keep the rent only to approx $900 per month ( we of course have funds for food, utilities, transportation, activities, clothing etc). Our goal was to get a cheaper rent in a safe neighborhood while we got to know the country and decide on where we would eventually like to save & purchase a home. Getting the cheaper rent would allow us to save more to achieve our goal of purchasing. My husband was born in Santiago but moved to the States as a baby over 30 years ago. He does not know the country at all so we were hoping to get advice from the locals to guide us to the safest place for our family and perhaps give us some realistic expectations.

No need for the SNIDE comment. A helpful comment with more information would have been more appropriate.

$900 a month would be fine if you eat once a week, but usually at least kids are addicted to eat daily.

THANK YOU!!! I appreciate thought and time into your reply. Here is our situation:

(By the way, I plan to home school our daughter as I found an amazing program through the Board of education here in the U.S. and it is taught 1/2 online & 1/2 offline and all materials are provided. In addition, the child gets a U.S. Diploma and can use that to return to the States or Europe for College)
