Safety in DR

I have been there a few times but mostly stayed on reservations.
Also, heard some horror stories.

For those of you who have lived here for a while what's the real story on this.
I will probably be coming to Romana shortly.
What should I be cautious about?

I've lived in NY and consider myself street smart, but DR is another world

Make sure someone has all of the pertinent contact information of where and who you are going to visit here and where you are going to stay.

Communicate with that person daily while you're here (and not your 'trustworthy' person here).

Tell that person to notify the authorities the moment you fail to communicate with them.

The last thing you want is to come down here and disappear, and nobody knows anything about who, where, or when to start looking for you.

Utilize a cel phone that allows for google location service so they know where your phone is.

Take this advice seriously. A lot of us has seen it happen here with someone who disappeared and we didn't know where to start.

Use common sense and always be aware of your surroundings. Someone told me this the other day: Never leave your beverage unattended when out. Meaning if you're drinking something always have it within eye sight.

Safety in The DR

On another thread some posters suggested that we develop a sticky of How to be safe in the DR. I put the following categories together - it's up to you to add content, add to the categories and generally share your tips of How to be safe in the DR. I think this is a most positive suggestion...

Contrary to what some posters promote...
no suits, no expensive looking dress shirts, watches or dress shoes.

If going to a lower income area or an area you're not familiar with I recommend shorts, a tshirt and flip flops with no watch. Makes you a less attractive target.

Bring your common sense with you and learn to trust your gut. If something doesn't feel right, it's probably not.

I regret to say that La Romana is a dangerous place . During the day in most parts except for central La Romana and in all parts at night ..delinquency is rampant .For the most part it is robbery with the threat of a pistol or knife but delinquents on bikes come from San Pedro and Higuey and the town of El Limon into different parts of La Romana and are particularly dangerous. On first appearances it appears the town is safe but if you are walking around it is not.

Sound advice. Do you think he should use DR1 as his home base while in the DR? We probably know more about him and his plan than anyone? Maybe twice a day? Early morning and beddy-bye.

JD's post is most definitely good advice for anyone traveling. Many of us never really think about the "what if" scenarios.

We certainly aren't short of reading material when Ken's in town that's for sure.

La abuela de mi esposa (RIP) used to say…. “ in DR nothing good happens after 9pm “ …..these days we make that 7pm …as much as we can ….mainly because of the kids ….

Safety rules to live by …in DR …we found …works for us…

1 . Don't go looking for something you don't want to find i.e. mind your business

2. Stay in your lane …( i.e. see rule number 1 ) …your safety is your responsibility ….and dare I say …anyone who does not take their safety seriously in DR deserves what they get.🤷😬

3. If you don't seek, you won't find….i.e. DR is safe …but it is as safe for you as you make it …people will leave you alone if you don’t want to be bothered …so don’t be running around dangerous areas / shady people and expecting safety ….and ..

4. If you are out there “looking “ …remember …”all that glitters is not gold” and as la abuelita used to say “ peace of mind is better than a piece of a$$ “ . Safety first! 🇩🇴

That works if you are the kind of traveller to plan each day and each stay. But if you are an adventurer you explore and stay where it's fun or you meet someone fun, etc.
So you may not know who you will visit or where you will stay.
Come on JD - you were young once.............
