This country is not for everyone- thank goodness - or it would be overrun by expats. Some make it others don't. It is one reason I do not befriend anyone here less then a full year! It is too hard to see "friends" sell of their things and leave.

That country is not for anybody who wants to live a normal human life. :)

That is a great post! Insult people - and you have the nerve to comment on others! I am just of many many who have created a wonderful life here! YOU are obviously not suited for this country.

Good luck in your travels - please go somewhere - anywhere else!

I'm not trying to insult anybody, I just like to say the true. Can you tell me how did I insulted you or anybody else here? Because I am saying something that doesn't fit to your wiev? Look, all this that I am saying is from my own expirience and it doesn't mean that it should be yours too... Tell me what did I say wrong about DR? Did I lie something?

P.S.

God bless you and all of you "many many" who "created a wonderfull life" in DR, we all have a different standards of a "wonderfull life" so I don't argue with you or your visions of what one "wonderfull life" should be.

" a normal human life" - so anyone who lives here and enjoys it is not normal or not human????? See you insult me. I live here, I love it and I would not exchange it.

That is how you insulted me and I am sure others. SO, if that was not your intent - great. It is not for you. Well it is for some of us. Live and let live my dear!!!!

The DR Is NOT A Great Place To Live,It Is A Place To Live!

Some of the posters on DR1 Think That "Dominican $hit Don't STINK!!!"
Some of us think it does !!!!!!!
You have to balance the bad with the good.
If you like to live in a country where you are,"On Your Own",The DR is for you!
You must provide for yourself all the necessities of civilized living here.
There are only, NO,BAD,or EXPENSIVE services available.
In a wierd way this gives you a lot of freedom.
In the civilized world, you can call the police, fire.dept, paramedics, electric company, water company, post office, etc.
In the DR,you can call, but you won't get any response to your problem. Most likely no one will answer,If they do,they will say everything, and do nothing
The weather is good, compared to where most of us come from.
Women are available,"easy",and cheap.
If you don't "Fall-In-Love" and start paying her,and her families, way through life.
I like some Dominican food.
It is like a good,3 Stooges movie watching the action of Dominicans.
Dominicans all react to any given situation in EXACTLY the same manner. That lets you know ahead-of-time how to behave to better them.
Dominicans know how to play baseball.
There is good,altho expensive,telecommunications here.
Dominican "Claim" that they are Catholics, but they do not practice their faith, except the 'Evangelicos".
Dominican men are notorious for "Cheating",then beating, their wives and girlfriends.
If you like to live in the counrty I have described, then the DR is for you! If not, keep on looking.

getting back to blending in and being safer, i learned this from a cop friend in miami and i do it in SD and it more than applies. most of us are in the habit of walking up to a store, pushing the door open and going in. my cop friend taught me, STOP, look through the glass and see what is going on inside first. you could be walking in on an armed robbery. it takes a little practice but after a while you'll always do it. it has saved me from entering a few bar fights.

Santiago
I got a great tip from an ex decorated police office here in Santiago and fellow DR1'er about how to make my car more secure; put the steering wheel lock bar between the gear shift and the fully engaged parking brake and it is virtually impossible to remove. This is much better than putting it on the steering wheel because the steering wheel is easily cut through in a matter of seconds.

I have read the postings from Dalmatrix with some sadness ..they remind me of Roy Stone who posts on the other site and who has a blanket problem here in the DR.
I have been here for almost a decade now , speak quite good spanish, play a lot of sport, eat out cheaply many nights and have built up a group of nice Dominican friends . I have tried to blend in well but it is easy to see that I am not a latino and as a result I have had some nasty experiences from those people who prey on foreigners whom they perceive as being super rich ..I think that happens in all poor countries .There are those who come to the DR and expect this country to be as their own or who try to change the DR ..I think that is an error . You must accept the DR for what it is and if you do not like it , then move on

I have read your post and it reminds me on the case of one men who tryed to train his donkey to live without eating and after cuople of weeks that donkey didn't eat, the man thought that he succesed, donkey died. :) Homo sapiens is strange creature, he can get use to live even in concentration camp and survive. But we can discuse about quality of life in concentration camp. :)

Just to make conclusion... even the Haitians who live in DR are making jokes about Dominicans and their dignity and atitude with gringos... ;)
