Or... leave that country and go somewhere else where you don't have to live in fear of nothing and where the people are normal, water is clean, food is safe, police is not corrupted with 1000 pesos, without barrs on windows, free to walk during the day and night, where nobody is looking at you like a potential walking-bank just because of your skin colour, where people have dignity, where people don't tell lies from the morning 'till the evening... etc, etc ...? What about that...? :)
dalmatix , I agree with your assessment and I may stay where I am now and not relocate to RD "why" one will ask, simple, I have all the things you mentioned as normal so the only up side I see in the RD is its beauty and the ability to live cheaper
I will visit with my camera and not stay thank you. In short, ya gits what ya pays fer

You need to hang around a better group of Dominicans.

Exactly. The only thing in RD that is good are the beaches...even prices of the products that we are use to, are not much cheaper than in Europe or some other normal and civilized part of the world. So, all in all, stay where you are or go to Europe...Mediterranean region is perfect for living because of the people, food, weather, calm sea, water that you can drink and taking a shower at the same time wherever you want, free to walk wherever and whenever you want, sleeping on the beach all night without fear and many more reasons why... Suothern part of Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, Malta, Spain... ;)

Need to hire help

I am purchasing a home in Los Cerros in Sousa and I need to hire a maid/gardner/housekeeper. They will have the entire ground floor suite and a salary. How do I find someone or a couple without children to do this? Is there a way to check references or at least get a recommendation from someone? What is a realistic salary?

Thanks

cut up some newspaper to the size of dollar bills, put a real dollar bill on top, fold pile in half exposing only the dollar bill to the outside, put about 5 rubber bands tightly around the pile, stuff "throwdown money" in easy to reach pocket. if confronted by a mugger, quickly grab the "throwdown money", let the mugger briefly see the wad as you throw it 20 feet away, run like hell for the nearest business, group of people, house with lights on. muggers want money, they will go for the money,,,,,,,,,you want an escape, take it.................................by the time the mugger gets the rubber bands off you should be having a good laugh............

This reminds me of the Top Tips from Viz Magazine. A little long maybe.

I didn't thru the threads but I am guessing it is impossible to have a gun in DR? And also, do criminals have guns in DR?

simple things you can do

After not being in the DR for over twenty five years and having listened to all the horror stories from others, going from being mugged in the street by the common criminal to having the same thing done to you in a bogus checkpoint(in a solitary street)by a corrupt "cop" I made my goal just to blend in with the crow. With that said, this was my mental list of hot to blend in when I arrived.Do not wear flashy clothes, that is with any logos, brands, etc. You have to dress the same or worst than the native Dominicans(very easy to do,considering that everyone wants to make a fashion statement alla)Do not rent a luxury vehicle or jeepeta((the latter might be neccesary depedng on where you are traveling e.g campo)Never count money where is visible, especially coming out of the exchange house.when you engage in conversations, never mention that you are not from there...e.g...I was by the malecon and someone started talking about discoteca platino??he noticed that I didnt know what he was talkig about and asked me where I was from since I didnt know about a one of "the best discotecas in the country"My simple reply was:yo soy de Alma Rosa y no vengo mucho por aqui.Simple as that,I could 've also said that I was from Santiago. At red lights, check all your mirrors,if somebody is creeping in,you know what to do(then again, who waits for reds in DR)It goes without saying, keep your windows closed at all time and doors locked.I lot of you guys know these things already, just wanted to share my experience. When certain people realized I was visiting, their statement was "you dont even look like you come from there, heck,tu ni pareces que viajas".Mission accomplished.

reply to dalmatix

Hi I share my time between cabarete and the south of France. Aix en Provence precisely. Of course, RD is a quite poor country... So problems. But very recently a friend of mine got robbed his laptop in Marseilles by 2 guys in the middle of afternoon and on a main street. And very recently, quite a few murders happened in the area...

I'm going to trade in my SUV for a reconditioned Sherman Tank.that should solve the driving hazards. Then get a suit of Armor for the city. Maybe I ahould take a 1 meter square piece of land, dig down 1 meter, plant myself and live fine as a tree, until some dog comes along and pees on me.

When you are walking in the city and get lost, stop and stand with your back to a building on a busy street where you can get a 180 degree view. Then you can review a map or guide or call someone safely. Same applies to taking photos, back up against a wall. Never walk along using a cell phone, Use it only by stopping as described above. You can't fully concentrate on security issues when you are yabbering on the phone!!! And get a local cell phone. If someone nicks it, so what, you are out maybe $50. But if someone nicks your brand new foreign I4S with all your info stored on it you are in big dudu. Don't carry credit cards around. Use cash or one debit card (for use only at a safe bank machine), leave all credit cards, (why would you need one, when they charge enormous fees and they may copy your card as well) your passport and jewellery in your home or hotel safe (WHAT? You don't HAVE a safe ???!!.Dios mio!). Carry a laminated copy of your passport only, a cheap watch, no bag if possible, walk fast as if you look as though you know what you are doing. Above all THINK safety without getting unduly worked up about it..
