It is reported that on Sunday the 'Catholic Church' called upon people to join a march against the opening of another toll booth (?) ('estafeta') at the El Catey airport turnoff.

So far it is not known who going where will have to pay how much and for what.... :cross-eye

{Up to now only drivers using the 'Bulevar Atlantico' to Las Terrenas have to pay (dearly).}

there was a 'revolt' when they originally built that toll booth - as I remember, a huelga

hence , the temporary booth at the bulevar......

they want that booth to charge for the peninsula.... but the peninsula has no new roads.... just the short LT stretch
yes, the 'old road' on the other side is newly paved....but.........

Entrance Fee to Saman??

....they want that booth to charge for the peninsula....

I can't see that happening.
Because, if that should really be the case, people would have to pay for leaving and entering the Saman? peninsula, as there is no other toll-free access.

As we have seen in recent weeks people here can get quite violent and this would provoke them again.

the position of the toll booth speaks for itself.....
unless it was built in error...

It controls access to the peninsula...... it would be a one way toll.
unfair, but I have no other explanation for a booth there..... and its a BIG one
just like the highway ones

Don't think the toll booth on Autopista Duarte to Santiago by the Moca turn off has ever been used? So there is a precedent of not using toll booths.

they built this one for the new LT highway... but encountered resistance..

its similar to the SDQ booth... just before the airport.. to access the airport, you pay a toll.

but this one's position also controls the peninsula

very strategic position... intentional or not... can't say

The construction deal the Fernandez signed off on was not a good one for drivers. The cost of building the stretch of highway over and through mountains was very costly. Many have asked why the toll is so high and the answer was that this was negotiated with the construction company and the toll will not be lowered. The toll booths were built when the new stretch of road was opened with the thought of possibly charging all who passed onto the Samana Peninsula. This was protested loudly at the time and the gov backed off. The 27km stretch to LT is a time saver vs going over the mountain in Sanchez but not many locals are using this route.

Derf,
the return from LT on the toll road is the prettier drive.

I go up and over the old road and return the new road... saves 500 pesos and gets you the best views
