Hi everyone! I'm in the process of planning a trip to the Dominican Republic in May, and am finding that the plane tickets from Phoenix to Santiago are much cheaper than to Punta Cana. However, I'm having trouble finding a reasonable way to get from Santiago to Punta Cana once I land. Do you guys know how best to get from one place to the other?

Thanks for your help!

Metrobus or Caribetours from Santiago to Santo Domingo (~2 hrs)
Taxi from Metro or Caribe station to Expreso B?varo stop (15 mins)
Expreso B?varo from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana (~3 hrs)

- where are you staying in Punta Cana?

You will spend a whole day travelling. Unless you are saving a whole lot, it's not worth the effort. STI Taxi to Metro or Caribe Tours, then bus to SD, then Taxi to PC bus stop, then in PC taxi to your resort. Fly into SDQ if the price is similar and still much lower than flying to PUJ. You'll cut out one bus and one taxi and several hours from the trip.

Try to get a flight into Santo Domingo (Las Am?ricas Airport) instead of Santiago. You will be able to rent a car and drive quite easily to Punta Cana. In less than 2 hours you will be at your resort-destination.

The Santiago-Santo Domingo stretch (and the crossing within Santo Domingo and then through Boca Chica) may be quite a hair raising experience, but you can lessen this by simply hiring a taxi. They will criss cross the country if asked, but settle a price before hand. Set aside a good 5 or 6 hours for the entire trip from Santiago to Punta Cana, don't be surprised if crossing Santo Domingo adds another hour to that, depending on the time of day, of course.

Valeu Cara!
I just drove last month from SD to PC, nice drive and the roads are very good. You must stop at "las Cuevas de la Maravillas" after San Pedro de Macoris, it is amazing. The longest leg of the trip was getting out of SD, buena suerte.

NALS' is the best post. If your final destination is PC, then you should be able to find a reasonable flight into SD (SDQ). From there taxis will take you a short distance to Las Americas (road) where a guy there directs bus passenger traffic. He will assist you. Just tell him your final destination and do the same for the bus drivers and cobradores. I use plural because from there you will connect to a Punta Cana/Bavaro bus in La Romana or Higuey (prefer Higuey but whichever comes first).

I do this to save like you are trying to do. If your budget is tight then you can save quite a bit depending on the current cost of PUJ flights. Taxi to road = $10 US, Buses combined = less than 400 RD (less than $10 US). The last bus stops at most hotels. Once again, be clear with the driver and cobrador of the second bus on this point.

One final important word of caution, i.e., the cheapest flights are usually the late-day flights. These compromise final destination objectives in two ways. 1) if too late a flight the buses won't be running and, 2) if they are, you'll likely be traveling after dusk (not recommended). I have planned around taking the latest/cheapest flight into SDQ, staying overnight at the airport, and getting a next-day fresh start. There are stores open all night, two large rest rooms, people you can ask questions to, and enough security where you can feel free to take a nap. Before you know it you'll be good to go first thing in the morning. Budget around 4 hrs from the time you leave he airport to PC/Bavaro. Good luck whatever you decide.
