After several high-profile crimes have affected the city of Santiago, the second largest in the Dominican Republic, the National Police appointed a new commander. The new person is Brigadier General Ramon Samuel Azcona Reyes, replacing Brigadier General Claudio Gonzalez Moquete.
General Azcona Reyes is appointed following the death of 52-year old Ana Francisca Gómez de Amaro by two motorcyclists who fired at her at the busy intersection of 27 de Febrero Aenue and Salvador Estrella Sadhalá on 7 October 2022 and that of lawyer Basilio Guzman, shot in front of his residence in Los Cerros de Gurabo in June of this year.
