The boonies

Marco
you usually give people some very sound advice but I fear not this time.
Sabaneta is hardly in the boonies now is it. I can get from there to your bar in the thriving metropolis of Sosua in about 15 minutes!
My Orange cellular service works extremely well in Sabaneta, in fact the reception is better than when I am in certain bars in Sosua!
Wales can have full DishNetwork service where he will be so I guess he is moving to somewhere where he can get all the services he wants at a cost that is no different from the centre of the universe in Sosua.
Impossible or plain inadequate? Not really wouldn't you say?
regards
Graham
ps start praying as it is "mis-spelled" or "misspelled" and not mispelled
I guess it's all a matter of perspective. If I live somewhere where my Verizon cell. phone won't work, I have to go to the next town to buy broccoli, nobody speaks English, I can't find a bar that plays my type of music, where I can't get my DSL internet line, where I can't get cable with some English channels, etc, I consider it the boonies.
As Orange cell. phones don't work very well around here, it's not our first choice and I did not know that they worked out there in the boonies.
Thank God for small favours.
As for satellite internet service, I am told that it is nowhere near as fast as our DSL lines here in the center of the universe.
I am also told that disconnects are rather frequent.
As I pay less than $30 US/month for my DSL line, I believe it's a teenie bit less expensive than satellite service with no equipment to buy.
My cable bill is something like $6 or $7 monthly without any equipment to buy, which also may be a wee bit cheaper than buying a satellite receiver, subscribing to a yearly service and getting the giant 8 foot dish needed to capture the signal.
As I remember it, I agreed with Chris' post that the OP would need satellite internet and TV. As the OP contacted me and explained that they have purchased a property in that area and moving is not an option, satellite is the only option.
So which part of my advice was not sound?
Calling it the boonies?
Heck, even Sosua is considered to be the boonies by people from Santo Domingo.
Regards, Marco.

That is true, but it is plenty fast enough - remember, we are talking about an asynchronous service and you can have 1 meg up and 2 megs down if you want. That's fast...

I've been on satellite internet for 2 years now and I've never had a disconnect - once I dropped out because of weather... in two years! disconnects depends on the quality of your system, if it is correctly sized for your needs and the only way a disconnect can happen, is weather (incorrectly sized), or broken modems or equipment

True - but I like having a US based IP :bunny: Seriously, we're in the business and this makes sense for us - for others it may not make sense. Eg. we have a customer that is based in Switzerland - he runs a vpn between his satellite dish here, and his office in switzerland - does he want a dominican ip? hell no! For him the setup makes sense. As a provider of Satellite Internet, if you have DSL available, this is your first choice. Satellite Internet makes sense when you have no other viable options, or need it for some other reasons.

It's embarassing!

I'm embarassed reading what some nitpickers do playing teacher instead of going to the matter at hand and being helpful to those asking for information.
What's the point of addressing a post just to be sarcastic and mean? It's embarassing!

Frank I'm not sure if I understand you correctly - Are you saying that I nitpicked? and I was sarcastic and mean? If my post read that way, then I apologise. It was not my intention. My intention was purely to answer a few point in Marco's post that perhaps could have let to misconceptions in general about satellite internet connectivity. Did I play teacher? Yes! and on this issue I am allowed, I am qualified and I am more than willing to pass along this information. Helpful? I think if you read the whole thread and you will see that I took some time to answer the questions fully.
