There is an English company that offers cheaper overseas calls. It's called One-tel. I always use them. They have a website at: www.onetel.com.

net2phone is good but the yahoo messenger is the best for me to call usa and england.
Only 2 cents / min to call usa. Use headphones and get connected at 33.6KBps or better (56k recommended).

Re: US or UK at 14.5 cents w/phone

www.bestnetcall.com offers the US or UK at 14.5 cents a minute using the telephone sitting on your desk, and the same phone lines, and none of the baloney or poor quality of headsets or net2phone, and no bills until AFTER the fact.

Indispensable for business use, and really nice for home use. It is also portable, as you also enter the number you are calling FROM, and receive the callback at that number.

Please tell us about your experience using this service? It looks to be the cheapest way to call the D.R..

Re: US or UK at 14.5 cents w/phone

This is the only service I have used from the internet that hasn't screwed something up. The voice quality is the same as if you pick up and dial. They bill your credit card either once a month, on the same day of the month, or if your bill hits US$50, and you can view the current or last month's bills online, and print it out. You can categorize your bills if you are rebilling clients for calls. You can view the time, length of call, $$ amount of call, and also the number from which you called, so you know if it was truly your call being billed to your account.

Help online (I once changed credit cards for the billing) was fast and accurate, and no questions.

I really appreciate the ability to go anywhere, use the local internet to access Best Net, and then use MY account to make calls that I need to make. My friends in other countries don't think that I am stiffing them for overseas phone calls, and I am not getting ripped off by the local phone company for the cost of overseas calls either. This works in the US to call my wife here in the DR, so we can talk everyday too when I have to travel, and it only costs me a buck for a few minutes of time with her.

Only bad time to use this seems to be Sunday afternoons, when eveeryone is calling the DR, and it can be hard to get a connection. During the week it is a breeze.

Hi Ian,

I am from England and I am with a company called BT. Aa part of a package called 'Friends and Family' you can have one international number. This basically means that when you dial this International number you get it at a discounted rate! It does work out cheaper. I have called the DR a few times and spent at least 20-30mins talking and I haven't had a heart attack over my phone bill. So that must be a good sign. Hope that helps you.

Re: Kim!- What a Difference!!!

Hi Kim, like your self i presently live in England (nice and cold over the last few days) but are going to move to the D.R in October. In the past when i have stoped in the D.R i got my Daughters to ring me from England as this worked out cheaper. As you are no doubt aware B.T have got more than there fare share of financial problems at the moment. No wonder, when you compare the company that Carol recommended Onetel charge 18p per minute to B.T 78p per minute. It just another reason to leave good old England!
Thanks all the same Regards Ian

Hi Ian,

Where in England are you from? Where are you going to live in the DR? The weather is getting colder alright. I have to put the heatng on some nights..! I also use Onetel. BT are a rip off I know, I've been with them for awhile now. I can't wait to get out of England myself. I wish you and yours good luck in the DR, hope to be joining you as soon as I am able...
