WE currently have dog fights in our neighborhood due a bitch in heat. After fixing up the hurt ones, I tried talking to the owners - I was told " it is NOT natural " and all refused. I keep trying .
What’s not natural? Do you mean spay/neuter? Could it be the cost, or was it offered for free?
We had a pair of rotties, spayed the female first (several asked “why???”), but there was almost horror when we neutered the male.

The island definitely needs a humane euthanization program. There are way too many stray animals suffering.
They definitely have one in the Zona Colonial. I remember years ago there were packs of dogs, and these days you never see a stray, evidently any strays are taken away and put down humanely.

So I was in contact with the rescue that I worked with. The issue with taking dogs back to Canada/US now due to Covid is not that it’s impossible, it’s the cost increase and decreased flight availability. They are still trying.

It’s now $500 USD to take a puppy or medium sized dog out of the DR, they can’t find people to take them, and the dogs only have gone when the adopter can afford to pay the fee.

Really though, this price is about half (or even 1/4) of what any “purebred” dog will cost in Canada. Advertised mixed breed labradoodles or whatever other small shihtzu/yorkie/you name it cross breeds are costing $500-$800 CDN.

I should add that if anyone is willing to do this, it’s very simple. Small dogs go under your seat, larger breeds go in cargo. I only ever took Banana the tiny chihuahua as carry on.

It took me maybe a half hour extra upon departure, so I arrived that much in advance to meet with the rescue and process the proper paperwork for the dog.
It was usually less time on arrival; no different than waiting for checked bags. The people picking up the dogs were always waiting and never late.
If this is something you are able to help with, it costs nothing but your time and helps a great deal.

My only regret was that I once missed out on a grey terrier type dog that looked exactly like Sprocket from Fraggle Rock. I wish he had gone home with me.

Maybe raising the money via one of those online sites might work to fund it?

I quoted what the rescue told me Dec. 27, 2020. They have shipped dogs during Covid, but many less than before.

If you mean $4000-$5000 for the price of a purebred puppy in Canada (not to ship one from the DR), I believe it.

My sister bought a shihtzu/Yorkie cross about 2 years ago. She paid $900 and I thought she was crazy since those cross type puppies used to be free or given away for the cost of vet fees.

I saw an article talking about how the demand for pets during the pandemic has grown exponentially. I don’t doubt that the cost now reflects that.

So really, adopting and shipping a viralata is much, much cheaper.

Off topic a bit, but I wanted to look up viralata because I had never heard it before. It's not in google translate. The first hit I got was a 2012 Lindsay blog saying exactly what I thought it meant.

And even post-humously she will remain an authority. Nowhere else will you find such a detailed, helpful description. Her wisdom lives on 😊.

Here is the article on demand for pets that I mentioned.

If you know anyone (local or overseas) looking for a dog, why not direct them to a Dominican Rescue. Purebreds are overrated anyway, no matter what animal.
