@JD Jones I do read many local news source and it seems to me that tourist and beach renovations are getting the press.
Real infrastructure, although needed, does not put money in peoples pockets other than those involved in construction. And my understanding is the business background of the current POTDR lies in another area.

Now please point me to the article saying the beaches will be left untouched...

Actually I want to put my hand up and say something. I was walking around the beach in Cabarete at the weekend (my birthday, 40 y pico de nuevo) and it struck me that with the exception of Juan Dolio, you never see any buildings much higher than a coconut tree beside the beach anywhere in DR. Despite all the corruption and the scandals, that's one rule that seems to have stuck, no tall buildings next to the beach, no overdevelopment. Compared to somewhere like Sunny Isles in Florida or many other places with wonderful beaches, it's quite a feat.

Pedernales is a Bad Joke. Nothing is there, not one hotel is even built or open. Bad dangerous road to get to. Pipe dream....................

My thought exactly. It's an extremely long chug from SDQ over to Pedernales, and hardly any tourist flights land at SDQ. I think the only way to get this to work would be to get airlines to do a double-drop at a new airport in that part of the country, until numbers build up significantly to encourage someone to fly direct.

With the talk of Jetblue having to cut back routes, Air France having pulled out completely, and the price slashing that is going on with some of the AI's I can't see this is going to work in the short term. There are already a lot of the chains going out on a limb in Miches, which is what, 2 hours?, from Punta Cana so about the limit of what a tourist is going to put up with. Surely for the AI model most people are looking for sand sea and sun, they don't really care whether it's Punta Cana or Pedernales do they?
What happen to the airline that had local flights from Santo Domingo to Barahona? Tickets were 50 dollars and the fight was 45 mins?

Yes it is an extremely long chug...........just like it was an extremely long chug from SDQ to Punta Cana some years ago. The government is now building new roads to eventually service Pedernales.

But the primary focus is not on getting the local population there, but rather going after the tourist market. To that end, they converted an old bauxite terminal for ships into a cruise ship port. They are preparing the much needed power infrastructure with the very same people who literally changed the face of Punta Cana (CEP-M). They are building a new international airport at Pedernales to accommodate the expected tourist inflow. Lastly, Iberostar is currently building and Hyatt is committed to build to AI resort hotels.

While the PC AI model has been successful, I do hope the powers that be take a different approach with Pedernales. I am told they are approaching things differently there, but time will tell.

I think they have the tools to succeed. When the airport is done and if the port is used to bring in construction materials and supplies they don’t have to rely to road connections alone. Also they started with a blank paper of the empty area so they were able to map out all major infrastructure before any builds are in the way.

The early smart money has already been committed.

Much like PC, the road will be the last piece of the tourism puzzle.

However, the advantage they will have over PC is planning, something PC lacked.......and being able to bring in tourists via the port.

Great info. Only about 150 more hotels, an airport with flights, and a road that you won't get killed driving and you are close............

DeJaVu. That sounds like PC circa 1996.

Hopefully, they can learn from the mistakes made in PC......and create a much better experience.

Has anyone been there lately? Anything different? These two pics are from late 2023. There were signs on this road marking the future locations of 14 hotels if I recall correctly. The drive from Santiago was long but not as difficult as I expected. The southwest is a beautiful part of a beautiful country.

In late June, 2024 they were building hotels and roads and various other infrastructure (power/water).

They have also begun the construction on the first runway at the Pedernales airport.

Most of the tourist activity is confined to the areas around the port. (tourist photos below);

I spoke with a few locals near the site of the proposed airport, and they were confident it would be completed by 2025. What do you think?

In my estimation...................not a chance would it be ready for 2025. The first runway should be ready, perhaps that is what they meant.

Given what I saw and was told, they will try to coordinate getting the airport ready for a soft opening sometime in 2026. And once built they will need to have the hotels ready to service those tourists. The hotels have a decent chance of opening in late 2025 but not the airport. They are currently building the first runway, then the airport facility will be built around it, and then adding a second runway, and also adding the road infrastructure to get from the airport to the hotels.

Ive been to Bahia de Aguilas. Its a long but beautiful drive. The road once you get to Cabo Roja was rough. wouldn't recommend it in a regular sedan. I can see Eco tourism or glam camping. Hope it doesn't turn into another PC

Thanks for the update.

I flew to Maria Montez (Barahona) in June and was driven to Cabo Rojo to see first hand what was taking place.

Maria Montez is being upgraded to handle the increased air traffic related to the building going on in Pedernales. Rumor has it that they will receive the first international flights and tourists, who will then be bused to the resorts, that is until the new airport in Pedernales is finished circa 2026.
