Can I send a brand new camera as a gift to my daughter in the Dominican? She needs it for work. Can I send it and not have her charged a import duty charge or tax when she receives it? I am really worried about it and wondering if I should re pack it to look "old" . please if anyone knows what will happen I HAVE to send it tomorrow by 4 PM PST It has a very expensive lens as well and I will be insuring everything for $2200.00 I need to know what the rules are and I can not find them anywhere and I do not speak the language.

thanks so much for any help

:)

You have to think about the lesser of the evils. If you declare it for insurance at $2,200 and declare less for customs and something does happen to it the insurer will only cover for the value declared for customs at most.

Best to call an air express company to obtain advice, they usually will have the resources or knowledge of a company who can assist.

I have given up sending anything by mail or courier. It never makes it... Not even used books! One envelope had the content removed and old newspapers put in ...and this is what was delivered.

Try to find someone to bring it with them or else you are taking a gamble that your daughter will ever see it.

Maybe I have just had super rotten luck... But that has been my experience.

I would send it with someone that is flying down there. Or I would just fly down there for the weekend and enjoy some rum while making the delivery!

Personally, I wouldn't send a $2200 camera by mail to DR via any route. Anything valued over $200 will be charged duty fees.

Wait until you or someone else is flying down and have them bring it to her.

I see that you are anxious. Two threads on this. Let me make it easy for you based on, oh, I don't know, say 50 years of experience???

DO NOT SEND IT DOWN HERE! ONLY HAND CARRIED BY A FRIEND.

IF YOU SHOULD FORGET OR IGNORE THESE SUGGESTIONS YOU WILL BE SO SORRY!! WHAT YOU HAVE SUGGESTED AS POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVES ARE NOT DOABLE.

FOR GOD'S SAKE PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT WE ARE SAYING!

FIND SOMEBODY IN YOUR AREA--WHERE ARE YOU NOW?--THAT WILL HAND CARRY THIS VERY GOOD INSTRUMENT DOWN HERE.

if you notice I was kind of yelling? That is because you are so close to doing something really stoooopid..

I had a good friend insure some cigar rings for 1,200 dollars and customs wanted me to pay another 1,200 for them...to get them out of customs. FedEx was no help either. They might still be there for all I know.

Used DHL once to send an envelope with Visa appliance papers.
The website said it would take 6 days, but it arrived within 3 days.

Something you MUST do, is put the cellphone number in the address label !!!!!
The receiver will get a call were and when it can be delivered.

Just put an extra box around the original box, so people don't see immediately what will be inside.

Hey Shrimper!!! The guy is talking about sending a Cdn$2,200 camera down here by DHL, and insuring it. That means the invoice says Camera, Value $2,200...and Customs will want another 2200!...Of course you could ship it down in one of those barrels or boxes and it would get here, but you are talking fast and fast is being hand carried.

Are you saying this is going to Higuey??? OMG!! What is in Higuey that is so important to photograph>>>???

Anyway, any phone calls yet???
