Unfortunately I recently had a heart attack and had to have heart surgery. I was in the new clinic in Sosua Centro Medico, Cabarete, WITH Universal Insurance. I can explain further if any of you wish to know how to do this, as I saw on some posts some of you were saying they do not accept ARS Universal.
This type of surgery was specialised and with the help of an excellent ex pat multi linguist Insurance Agent (pm me for details) and Universals North Coast Boss found an excellent Cardiologist in the HOMS Clinic. (Tel No. 829 947 2222) Dr. Licurgo Jacob Cruz Diaz, ext. 8904 I can also recommend an excellent Neuro-surgeon at that clinic, Dr Adriano Valdez Russo .
Before going into the new clinic in Sosua, it was found that there were no beds available in any clinic in Puerto Plata at all, except two on the public ward at Hernandez.
I discussed this after my op with Dr Cruz and Dr Russo and they said this was a serious problem in the whole of the country. I only managed to get the last bed available at the HOMS and this was a two room suite. They said the HOMS clinic were building two more floors to try to accommodate the demand, but even that will not be enough. This clinic is superb, by the way.
This has been caused by the Government and the new law that all employees must have health insurance. Whilst I am very pleased that the Dominicans and younger expats working here now have health care, this has not been thought out well beforehand and the Health System cannot cope with the demand. It is going to be even worse when the tourist season starts. Even Bournigal is building an extension/rooms behind the Clinic they have bought in Cabarete.
We are going to be in for real serious problems folks.
