Gimabella, I hope you dont think I was trying to sway you away from your plan... I'm not. Just trying to be realistic.

I hope you go and I really wish you luck. I'm all for dreaming and following your dreams. Like another poster said, now is primetime for you to do so (sans marriage and kids) and you have youth. I can see that the best asset you have to offer is that you are friendly and you have determination.

As you mentioned above, you always have your passport... So dont burn any bridges wherever you go, and remember that nothing is permanent in life.

All the best!

i don't think any rational human can expect everything there to be all beautiful with roses all the time. every country in the world is plaqued with their own problem's. but to compare the eminent threat of terrorism in nyc, like 9/11 to some labor and student protests is ridiculous. what do i have to do with student/labor protests? and what's wrong with protests? its a healthy forum for people expressing their concerns. at least they're allowed to protest, unlike many other dictatorial countires in this world.

life is short my friend. and there's no reason we should restrict our selves in living it because of some of the reason's you mentioned.
Running the gaunlet of burning tires and dodging Molotov Cocktails does not make me think of those protests as "healthy forums"

Anyway if live in fear of terrorism in the US please do move to the DR. One less New York wussy is fine by me.

brothers and sisters it is time to understand that the USA is becoming a place just to make money... NOT TO LIVE LONGTERM. the Dominican republic is a relatively safe place, not only because we are at peace with EVERY other country in the world but also because life is more than making money and paying bills, it's about being at peace with yourself and enjoy it!!! you only live for so long, so you might as well make the best of it!!!
This has got to be the funniest post of the year!

I wonder how many of you actually have any idea what it's like to do business in the DR? Have any of you lived here for 6 months or more (excluding Tony C)?

I suggest some of you read and re-read what Talldrink has been posting in this thread.

Doing business here is nothing like you ever imagined and no pieces of paper or plaques on the wall can prepare you for the DR.

Doing business here is about networking, who you know. I don?t care if you are a Harvard M.B.A. If you don?t know the right people, you better go buy some boot polish and find an old milk can as that?s the only way you are going to make any money.

Gimabella - You are on the wrong side of the river if you're looking to give financial advice. Plus, I have never seen a small business consultant here, maybe for good reason :)

You need to live here for an extended period of time before even thinking about the DR as a future place to do business. You need to live and breathe it 24x7 to understand it.

I honestly with you all luck, I just hope you take the advice given on this board. The advice from people that have done or doing what you?re dreaming about.

give it a shot but leave other options open....

mk-ultra,
give it a shot but leave other options open, just in case. Most of the previous advice, both pro and con, has its merits but this is a very personal decision and only you will have to live with the consequences. Briefly, let me tell you my personal story. After 3 decades in the states and 21 years at a very good job I took a lump-sum retirement fund payment of 250K, in 1990, and took a year off to travel and enjoy. Well, 9 years later, I still had not gone back to work, had gone to Europe for 4 years after having travelled extensively in the states. I came back to the DR with only 30K left and spent the next 3 years looking for work or being underemployed.

God looks after his sheep, I believe, since just when I was going completely broke I found good employment and have been slowly getting back on track for the last 6 years. The naysayers told me I would not adapt to my native culture after so much time living in the 'civilized' world. Thankfully, they were wrong and I have adapted well and enjoy inmensely living in this underdeveloped country with many problems but with basically good people.

I understand how you find that American society has changed and many people agree with you. It's obvious. You will have to give up some comforts but will gain other things to make up for that so, by all means, give it a try.
Best of Luck!

How typical! Can't respond so you resort to insults.
Well I hope the DR is the paradise you are looking for.

sure i'll start... seems like this could be very personal for some people. for me there are many reasons but i'll try to make it as quick as possible so i don't bore you with my issues.

i was born and raised in nyc/nj. i love nyc. never thought i'd want to leave. but things here have gotten a little heavy in the last few years. the cost of living has gone sky high. artists and people who earn a modest living have been forced out of the city to the outer boroughs and jersey. the laws have gotten much more restrictive, i'd even say almost like a police state in some cases. there's just a general feeling of tension in the air. the stench of dead rats in my neighborhood, coupled with the ongoing construction constantly disrupting our lives here in brooklyn, that's gotten to me. the congested traffic. the police. in essence, nyc seems to be teeming with negative energy.

i first thought maybe i'll move to florida or another state. but then i'm also tired of the political climate in our country. tired of our current government, which seems almost slated to win again in november (sad to say). tired of this war and the constant threat of terrorism. tired of the alerts. the culture of fear that we constantly deal with. basically i need a break from america. want to slow things down a bit.

why DR? my parents are both dominican. my mother lives here, but my father lives in Las Vega. I have tons of family down there, most of which i don't even know. but i have lots of friends too all over the country and good contacts. business ops and a comfortable plan to make a good living. I've been going to DR every year for the last 5. sometimes 2-3 times a year. i'd like bavaro because of its laid back ways. i'm a music producer and need some space when i work and some privacy. thats why i wouldn't live in SD. i know too many people there.

well thats pretty much my story. oh yeah...plus the fact that my wife is hating nyc and wants to be under the sun. thats another main driving force. ;)

anyone else?

mk

My parents left the DR in 1950 to ensure their baby girl (me) had the best that life could offer. New York may suck, but that is NO REASON to return to the DR. At the moment, the DR is probably
--the most sexist
--the most racist
--the most corrupt
nation in the Western Hemisphere.

As totally screwed up as the U.S. is at this point, why go back to a nation that has shown no compassion for women, Haitians and law and order.
Let Lionel make his changes before you move. I predict he'll be assassinated.

that is exactly how i am/we are doing and the cost of living here is ridiculous.....but i already live in the d.r.....please tell me what i am doing wrong.

is this a case of ' the grass is always greener on the other side' (...or something like that)?

the thing is my friend, that i make my money in dollars. internationally at that. the work i do here i can do from anywhere in the world. so if i can continue to do what i'm doing and earning what i'm earning, the cost of living there fails in comparison to the living expenses of nyc. let me put it to you like this, around $1800(us) a month just for rent in an old building in nyc or $1000(us) or less a month in a very nice, modern apartment near the beaches of bavaro? if you do the math and compare the two, it gives you food for thought. which is why i'm seriously considering it and which is why starting tomorrow i'm going to be on the island for 10 days. to do the numbers and compare. anylize this move like a game of chess. then when we get back to nyc, we'll decide.

i'll keep you updated.

peace

my parents left DR in the 60's for the same reason's. Probably most of our parents did. but in the end many of them always long to return and retire in the DR. my father already went back and my mother wants to soon. wonder why?

your assertions about the DR being "--the most sexist

and what do you mean "no compassion for women"? dominicans are amongst the most passionate and greatest lovers in the world.

Gambilla: Girl, I hope you work on your communication skills before you graduate...

Gabriella: That was such an exagerated post. I agree that those reasons are not priority for ME, because I am very grateful for the life I can provide for my children here in the US. However, the reasons that YOU say NOT to move to DR are not valid and just an exageration of what you think is wrong with the country.

MK-Ultra: You got the right idea... It has been said many times here that the foreigners that bring businesses that can survive here are the ones that can be done any place in the world.

Guys, listen to Robert - he knows what he is talking about...

Most corrupted...?
I beg to differ... what about our governments ties to Halliburton company?, how quickly we forget Enron? all these folks in the states that have lost their pensions becuase of shady deals by giant corporation executives whose greed has them with their heads so far up their derriere that they can taste what they had for breakfast. Call me Naive (better yet, Jay will suffice) but...

back in nyc

for anyone who was following this thread a couple weeks ago and might be interested to know. after spending 10 days in DR, i never made it to bavaro. as many already know, the bridges crossing the chavon river were and might still be down. there were options for me to cross over to the east but things were so bad that it wouldn't be worth the headache. so i had to cancel all my meetings there and lost out on some business.

needless to say i still haven't decided if i'm going to move to DR or not. i will be back in the country in 1 month and hope to have everything finalized by then. my plans are still moving forward, but this last hurricane was a big set back. 1 month to be exact. i will keep updating as i know more.

the trip wasn't a total waste though. i travelled around the country from, puerto plata to moca to las vega to SD to juan dolio back to SD to boca chica back to SD, then to cabarete and back to las vega and finally santiago. was a great experience to say the least since i drove a borrowed car the whole time. was a little adventure. now i'm back in gloomy nyc. :tired:
