Today we shipped the last 6 boxes with our shipper of choice, Embarque Bella Vista, to Santo Domingo before our trip next month. For those of you who have never done it, and wonder what a "box" is, here are 5 of the 6 that left today. The company provides them. Grandsons not included :squareeye

Do the boxes have a weight limit, obviously can't be too heavy? Our friends are moving here and are considering what things to bring. How detailed is the recording of contents? For example, will 'toys' work for one box and 'kitchen' appliances for another? We brought very little....bits at a time so didn't need a shipping service so would appreciate the info. Thanks.

How about cost because I just shipped a box and I think I got ripped off. I have shiiped a couple of those blue plastic barrels and the cost was $30 for the barrel and $100 to ship (from the NYC area).

Call the contents "household items". Weight of the boxes is not an issue. It depends upon the size of the items and the amount to see if it is better to ship a box or boxes versus barrels.

The boxes cost $75 each to ship, 3 for $200. That price is from southern NJ, not sure if it's cheaper in NY. There is NO WEIGHT LIMIT on the boxes, if it fits it ships. We do wrap our boxes in shrink wrap/film for strength. Two of the 6 boxes are ridiculously heavy because someone gave me 100 cans of beans, corn and evaporated milk, about 30 pounds of soap [bars], about 40 pr of new flip flops, about 30 new baseball caps, etc. The cans are very heavy, so we split them between 2 boxes. There are a LOT of clothes in these boxes, we hit the end of summer sales and buy up everything when it's 75-90% off. We'll be giving away almost everything where we live.

You do not need a detailed listing of the contents. We put very vague descriptions. We do this every year, and have never had a problem and never had anything missing.

bigbird, you were not ripped off, that's exactly what we've paid for the barrel and shipping. Actually, I think we paid $40 for the barrel, so you got a deal. What company did you use?

We still have 2 suitcases to pack, nothing to put in them yet because all our clothing is in the house there already. No doubt we'll find more "stuff" by then.

Oh well, I feel a little better. I was charged $80 to ship one box but couldn't understand why it was only $20 less than when I shipped one heavy barrel. Now if you can believe this..........I needed a foot stool to match a loveseat I bought from IKEA in Santo Domingo. Even with the $80 shipping charge it turned out cheaper to buy the footstool and cover in New Jersey and ship it.

I used San Miguel Embarque located in Passaic, NJ. They will drop the barrel off at your house and come back another day to pick it up. I only live a 20 minute drive from them so I found it easier to just drop my stuff off at San Miguel instead of haning around the house waiting for them to come. Shipping time is three weeks, maybe a few days less if they get your packages closer to the day the container leaves their office. The last barrel I received they dropped it off on a Sunday afternoon.

I have no complaints about San Miguel Embarque. I just had no pricing to compare them with. The barrel arrives with a seal and they open the seal in front of you to inspect the contents before they leave.

bigbird, "ouch" on the footstool. At least you know you paid the going cost.

Thanks for the shipper info, always good to have a backup!

Like I mentioned I do feel a lot better knowing I have been paying the going rate for shipping.

Not that bad of an "ouch" with the footstool. IKEA has some markup on their merchandise in the DR. My purchase total in NJ was $287. Add to that $80 for shipping. So $367 to buy in the states and ship compared to $377 to buy at IKEA in Santo Domingo. The biggest advantage was the IKEA in NJ had all the items in stock plus I get it delivered to my door. On top of that I also slipped a few extra items in the box to be shipped saving myself some additional cash.

Point being, I am learning that at times it does indeed pay to ship............

It almost always is better to ship something from the US rather than purchasing it here.

Hello...I'm looking to ship some boxes or barrel to Santiago. Does anyone know of any companies that ship from the Washington DC/Northern VA area to DR?

I wanted to ship a 55 gallon blue barrel from NYC and called Montero Shiping - $35 for the barrel and $115 to ship to Punta Cana. Montero makes a little nervous because their info email has not worked for years and they advertise it on the website, what does that say about a company... Better options anyone can recommend from NYC, and please a link to their website?

At least they have a website.

The people we've used for a LONG time are Embarque Bella Vista, Bronx, NY, and they don't have anything - no website, no e-mail. Add to that the fact that their containers come into [I believe] Puerto Plata and our home is on the south coast, but still no complaints. No problems either.

Merengue Shipping in the Bronx is aces. they pick up at your house, and deliver it to your destination in DR. i guess most do that.

I have used Montero shipping twice with no problems. The have an office in Hyattsville MD and in the Bronx. I shipped from both of them. They drove out to my office once in Northern Virginia, another time they drove to my parents house on Long Island.

Shipping from VA/DC to DR

Here's everything I know about shipping from Virginia/DC (I'm in Fredericksburg)
Good luck!
This is who I used last May to ship things. I was very pleased and will use them again.
Shipped 2 wardrobe boxes and 1 dish pack for a total of $700(250 + 250+200) Obviously I won’t ship another dish pack. Found them by calling a local church with an Hispanic ministry; they put me in touch with a Dominican member who uses this company. This man gets a ‘discount’ because he is a frequent shipper. Maybe some day I’ll qualify too. I bought the boxes from my new Dominican friend for cost – he keeps them on hand from Obdulio. You can get them from any moving company.
Obdulio Cargo Express 13869 Redford Lane Woodbridge, VA 22193
703-678-5778 646-938-5320 Santo Domingo 809-580-6999

What I learned about packing the boxes… Since weight is not an issue, I wrapped the more ‘fragile’ items in clothing and fabric I was shipping. I had neatly packed small/tiny items in boxes but my new friend opened the boxes and dumped the contents in on top of other stuff then shook the box to settle the contents! Freaked me out but the only damage I had was a couple of cake pans with dents. Included in these boxes were a dozen half-gallon canning jars – not one broke!!
I didn’t have to fill out any paperwork – just provided an address & phone number. The receipt says “2 cajas de ropa grande, 1 caja de ropa 5/6”
Boxes were delivered in TWO WEEKS; they even brought them down a flight of stairs to my apartment. (Cabrera, North coast)

Info I saved from an earlier posting – Didn’t use them because getting my things to them from Fredericksburg would likely cost more than the shipping to the DR!
HB is correct. If you can get the items to Silver Spring, MD (and I take my boxes from Manassas) then I have the only company to use: Oligil Fashions, 8549 Piney Branch Rd., Silver Spring, MD 20901. (301) 565-2935. I buy U-Haul Shorty Wardrobe Boxes and my only 'paperwork' has been a list of the items in the boxes. Oligil takes care of everything else. I've been using Oligil for years without incident to Santiago.
Juan (el jefe) (301) 565-2935.
oligilfashion@aol.com

Afterthought - Olgil will take Rubbermaid-type containers. Found the best price for HD Rubbermaid brand at Walmart online - 6 for $$$ (forget amt but it was the best I'd seen)
This is a way to go if you want tight containers to store things in the DR. Consider that the price here will be at least triple what you pay in the US
