Shore fishing nr Bayahibe.

I am staying at the Casa Del Mar nr Bayahibe from the 11th July for a couple of weeks. I am interested in finding out if it is worth bringing my lures to do a spot of fishing from the beaches.

I am also interested in boat fishing in the area.

Anyone been there done that.

Forget Shore fishing near Bayahibe.

Rent a skiff go after WHY.
You don't say where you're from or what kind of gear you have so it's hard to advise you as to what you'll need.

I'm from London in the UK and was going to take a light beachcaster and some lures.

Where can you rent a skiff from and roughly how much does it cost.

Don't listen to "El Gordo"

Don't listen to "El Gordo." There is some great shoreline fishing to be had at Bayahibe as well as the rest of the DR. Luckily for us Light Tackle fisherman most Dominicans only consider it fishing if you are going after Billfish or Tuna. That leaves miles of underfished shoreline for us.

I am a Flyfisherman and I have have many a fine day at bayahibe and surrounding areas landing Jacks, snook and assorted snappers and groupers. Unless your bringing lots of tackle I recommend some heavy mono or short wire leaders as some of the species you will encounter are rather Toothy(Lots of barracuda so I would go with wire.)

Bring some diving lures and some jerk baits. Rapalas should do fine. Try some topwater plugs for thrills.

As thye bottom in that area near shore is mostly sand with some coral outcropings go with lightcolor lures.

Thanks Tony, that's really helpful. I have been hunting for ages to find something about what the fishing was like around there. Nothing I like better than getting out early and wetting a line before the sun gets to high in the sky.

I will be taking Rapala's, some Yo-Zuris and assorted other shallow diving lures. I was going to use 15lb reel line with 28lb wire traces, with a light beachcaster hoepfully that will tame most things that will come my way.

I will certainly let you know how I get on.

It's True That 'El Gordo' Disdains Fly Fishing

I find FF to be a somewhat effiminate activity it's true.
Here in BC all kinds of Folks FF but after trying it once, and easily catching a fish, I said enough with this foolishness and went back to Real Man's Gear.
I suppose if catching 1ft long Barracudas all day is 'your thing' it's fine.
Myself I like to drag Feathers for Tuna & Dorado aka Hell-on-Wheels on light gear.

Anyone can troll around all day and hope to snag a Dolphin or tuna. And Dolphin put up a decent fight for about a minunte.

Try jumping a 100 lb tarpon in 3 feet of water. Or hanging on to a bonefish as it screams off a 200 yard run. As for barracuda, look again there are many 3 to 4 footer cruising the coast that I have landed. And they are still there because I am "Catch & Release."

BTW Don't even think that trout fishing in BC is even 1/2 as difficult as Saltwater Flyfishing.
