The Dominican Republic will soon have a non-stop flight from Santo Domingo (SDQ) to Cheddi Jagan International Airport (GEO) in Georgetown, Guyana, South America. President Luis Abinader this June 2023 was in Georgetown with a Dominican business mission and flew in on Skycana.

President Abinader and President Mohamed Irlaan Ali of Guyana signed an Air Services Agreement that is an important step for the start of the flight. The flight is an opportunity for increased tourism and business between both countries.

Skycana is planning four flights a week to Georgetown from Las Americas International Airport (SDQ), the main airport for Greater Santo Domingo.

Two months ago, President Irlaan Ali of Guyana had announced the Sky Cana flight would connect Guyana to Canada, too. President Irlaan Ali had announced the company would fly to Canada thrice a week. A flight to Houston...

I am confused as to why anyone would fly to Guyana. Is it a good place to go?
It does have interesting places to visit and English is the main language. Resembles the DR in many ways, murder and armed robberies are common, many embassies post warnings about travel to the country, power grid is decrepit, police force not capable of dealing with the countries crime problems, etc.

Like the DR, agriculture and mining (gold) contribute heavily to their GDP but an 11 billion barrel offshore oil field discovered in 2015 has been a massive financial windfall for them. Caribbean music is a big part of their culture Windy. A diverse mix influenced by aboriginals and European settlers.

Some people confuse it with French Guiana, a nearby country. Two totally different countries. Not saying French Guiana is a rough place but it’s the place where Legion Etrangere recruits go to train in the jungle to become commandos. All the snakes, bugs, and jungle diseases you can handle just for the right to wear the Legion Kepi, have your slate wiped clean of past crimes, and if you manage to stay alive for your initial five year contract, you get a French passport.

I’m surprised Luis hasn’t had a sidebar with Macron and requested Legion intervention in Haiti. Basically a paid band of well trained mercenaries under French command, but a highly effective band of mercenaries.

Mining is probably the common denominator. Like the D.R, Guyana has large gold reserves. Not as much as the D.R but a lot. I have not heard of one single person traveling there for anything other than work "mining" or to visit the ghost of Jim Jones's cult.

After check the google maps, I see that location is not that great but going to Georgetown, looks like 15-20 minutes north. This will be interesting.

Thanks. Absolutely no good reason to go there from your description.

I was talking to a TECHNIP offshore oil engineer yesterday about the Guyana oil fields. Since the original find in 2015, many new areas have been discovered. The oil reserves are large and Exxon is one of the major players in Guyana. That field is turning into a big cash cow for the government. Whether or not the oil royalty wealth trickles down to the citizens, remains to be seen. Like the DR, government corruption in Guyana often results in an increase in personal political wealth and very little else.
