You can also safely use Caribe Express branches or Banco Caribe (same company) which always has better exchange rates than banks, and alternatively Vimenca/Western Union also has good rates (better than banks but not as good as Caribe Express/Banco Caribe).

But be advised Western Union requires passport in hand to exchange money where as Caribe doesn't.

Well, we generally know that DR is a city wherein crime are visible. However, there also some spots that you may consider safe to go. By the way, as a solo traveler, you also need to be smart and practice general safety.

actually, YOU generally know that DR is a city wherein crimes are visible. the rest of us know that DR is a country.

Punta Cana for the most part is safe, tourists normally do not travel beyond the front gates of the resort. The most danger they will encounter is overdrinking, overeating, etc....(of course these activities can lead to brawls, etc..). There is very little to do in Punta Cana and it really does not represent the DR as a whole. It is a favorite amongst the AI crowd, not so much your tourist looking to experience the DR culture.

I see no real danger for someone who is traveling solo. Common sense goes a long way.
