My 16 year old son and I are traveling to DR, Puerto Plata area in April. He has liberty spiked hair (mohawk with spikes) Will we encounter any problems due to his appearance? I think he looks good in it. It's only hair and he is a really good kid. Any input? Thanks.

He might want to bring his own KY Jelly for the use by customs if they take offense when deciding to check him for contraband.

You don't see a lot of Mohawk haircuts ( or Mohawk steel workers for that matter) in the DR.

I always use the "don't look like an idiot gringo" approach when going to foreign countries, no shorts, flip flops, straw hats, being 3/4 or more drunk and loud, etc. So a mohawk ought to be interesting.

Bring bribe money too.

Unless he is obviously a foreigner (i.e. white or asian) then you should be careful. The DR has no subculture or counter-culture movements and dress and hairstyles associated with it usually result in suspicion of drug use, the police occasionally round up kids with wierd hairstyles for questioning and other things, but would almost certainly leave a foreigner alone unless they suspected they might find drugs on him.

Thank you for your input. He doesn't have any tatoos, piercings, or any thing else and really looks like a clean cut kid, except for the hair. Maybe I shouldn't let him wander around by himself? Thanks again.

He is about to get more attention than he ever imagined....

Thank you for replying. Do you mean good or bad attention and should I start worrying. I really don't want our trip ruined just because of his hair!

You think he looks good in it and is a really good kid? Be proud then and walk tall.

Glad my daughter only wanted highlights in hers I guess.

I mean?s that in a good way. Dominicans are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet, also open and curious. He may be able to use his hair to his advantage if he is out going etc.

It gets pretty hot in the DR. He should be prepared that it might wilt. But hey, keeping it off his shoulders will be a blessing. :) Take along the usual sun screen and bug spray.
Have a great time!

legglady...

My son was 19 with shoulder length hair when I took him to DR...also, no tatoos, really good, clean cut kid!

Best solution was to have his hair braided with thick 'cornrows'...very practical for the beach, and he looked sooo cute!

He got so much attention from the girls at the resort...he wanted to go to the disco every night!!!

I suspect your son will have a lot of fun also! Even if he looks like this...<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/15/15_8_10.gif' border=0></a>

Tell him to learn the basic 'merengue' and 'bachata' steps from the 'animaci?n' team when they teach it, he'll do OK!

Just relax and enjoy your vacation! Everything is beautiful in the DR!<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/16/16_4_22.gif' border=0></a>

The ladies who braid hair on the beach are DEFINITELY going to want to know how he gets it to stay that way, providing he can with all the wind and humidity :cheeky:.

I would suggest some good strong sunscreen for his head, though. When I get my hair braided, I usually use a spray-on spf 30.

I agree 100%!!! For anyone who doesn't know what it's like to have a burnt scalp, you don't want to know! I got my hair braided last year in Mexico and damn, was my head ever sore a couple days later. I didn't even think about my scalp burning! It's not so pretty when it starts peeling... :p

Not to worry, he will get a lot of good attention. The spikes are there for a good reason, to draw off excess body heat in this hot climate. Also, be aware, the locals will be very curious. He and you should not be offended if some of them, especially the girls, will want to examine his spikes close up.

Do not be concerned about the law they will see he is with mom.

Have a great visit.
