Sosua businessman calls for improvements of the Sosua beach

I've seen cop cars sweeping the beach around sunset telling the tourists to get off the beach, but never running over sleeping dogs. It took them about a half an hour and all of the beach bars were already locked up and a couple cops follower behind the car.

Now 25 years ago, it use to be you could go down to the beach at night and they'd have candles at the beach bars. But there were maybe 20 casitas on the beach total. Eddy's was about the only ex pat bar in El Batey back then. You could find it by the giant satellite dishes. Los Charimicos was bigger than El Batey by far.

I'm making the assumption most of you know the chatter on this gringo chat box has less than zero impact on life here, right?

Oh, I am aware of the fact they do not listen to any input from the people who visit...they go about their plans oblivious to the realities of tourism and what we need. They have some bizarre idea that if they build it, we will come....no matter how expensive or the fact there is nothing to do here for a couple or family. This will ultimately be their downfall......

Who is Mario Garcia?

Exactly. Does he own a beach bar or a casino? Has he been in Sosua for two weeks or ten years?

It's more likely he is *businessman* in that he's looking for a place to start a business if he wins the lottery because he heard Jimmy Buffet sing Cheeseburger in Paradise once and thinks having a bar would be *fun*. It's been known to happen.

The casitas were just as crappy when Sosua was doing fine. They were prob worse. It's also July not January.

Hard to believe that the guy doesn't have something to gain. I think he is more than just a public spirited citizen.

It would be interesting to follow who buys the big piece of land behind the shacks on the beach. That would give us an answer on everything down there, and maybe a clearer view on the future.[/QUOTE

As far as I know that land is owned by Banco Central, the government. Not for sale....yet. Papi Bermudez owns the far western tip, on the water edges,
not the beach, a small parcel, which is obviously public for the first 60 meters, which is, by law, public domain. Don't know how any info would clarify. The shacks are squatters with no titles, but many have decades of existence and some backed by current or former gov't officials who get their cut and have influence and are thus, considered by some as legitimate.
It's another jigsaw puzzle, like many so-called public access, protected, public domain areas of the country, especially if they produce, or have the potential to produce profits. Amazing that beach bars are bought and sold at all, anywhere here, without a hint of real due diligence. Same happens in town too, but that's a different animal.

I know it, you know it, and some others, I think, know it. But from the intensity of many of the posts, I don't think all do.

You're so right. The people would could change things don't even know about DR1 and other boards. And, I'm sure couldn't care less about what we think. I'm just having a good time reading and posting. It beats crossword puzzles or Sudoku.
