I don't particularly think this deserves a new thread but couldn't find one to "add it to" and wanted you all to share (if there is a thread I have missed please feel free to add mods at your leisure!;) ):

My partner who goes off a travelling for months at a time - such is his passion (curb any jokes implying it's 'coz of me too - naughty people!!:D) gave the quote of all quotes the other day!:

"WHY Spain though? IF you're going to go abroad why not the DR?? - FAR more beautiful, very friendly, cheaper, and THEY speak Spanish!!!!"

He was talking to one of his best mates and his partner who are re-locating to Spain next month in a bid to get a "nicer environment" while utilising their ability to speak (close on!) fluent Spanish! - HOW refreshing that was to hear from a person that "bigs up" Australia and was kind of "less than excited" at going to the DR for a family holiday having spent 5 weeks in Thailand!!

SO he continued:

"Tell you what, IF I were you I most certainly wouldn't be bothered with Spain - GO to the DR and tell me I'm wrong!! I have NEVER been to a nicer place..."

PAR HAR HAR HAAAARRR!!! SO! I'm RIGHT sometimes am I now when I think a country is WORTH a visit...??????

This is a post of me being 100% secretly "smug"!! ;) - Though ALSO (me thinks) illustrates how the DR (despite any negativity) can influence the thinking of even a BORN traveller!! SHOWS what a good holiday can do to a man now... ATB!! Emma;)

Spain v DR well we always knew there was no contest! That said I do a bit of rock climbing and I find Spain in the winter a great choice for that.
Ive been trying my best to convert my mum to the DR but she will not listen, shes just booked to go to Barbados in November. I'll be interested to see what she makes of her first trip to the Carribean.

Spain has it's own beauty, who wouldn't want to go to Spain. I am sure your friend will go to DR some day.

Everybody's Doing it Man...

I believe Spain is the number 2 or 3 travel destination in the world, followed by France #1 and I think the US #2.

Dominican Republic more beautiful than Spain?

Depends what you're looking for, they're very different countries. If you're only comparing the costa's, sun, beach, resorts, (e.g. Punta Cana vs. Benidorm :surprised), the DR wins hands down. I really hope the Dominican resorts never 'develop' to the horrible degree places like Benidorm and Torremolinos have developed. But compare the Prado or Reina Sofia with the Museo de Arte Moderno in Santo Domingo or the Centro Leon, the historical buildings of the Zona Colonial with those of Barcelona, Santiago de Compostela, etc, the Pyrenees with the Cordillera Central, well.....

Spain Vs The Dominican

I think that choosing the DR or Spain depends on what you are looking for. Cities like Barcelona and Seville in spain are just absolutely gorgeous cities and they just have no comparison to anywhere in the Dominican;) . However if you are a beach lover, the Dominican:glasses: would have more to offer.

Being an american and living in America where our history is just a few hundred years old at the most, it just awes me whenever I visit europe and see history that dates back to thousands of years. I am a history lover and seeing all the historic buildings that date back thousands of years is the real deal. I am not a beach fanatic and could very much do without it.

That being said, I can realize that those living in europe see all that history everyday and it has become part of their everyday life. To them it might be boring and they might want to see something else so the Dominican :squareeye might be an exciting change.

I loved Spain when I was there. I grew up in Europe enjoying all of the history and got used to it. I miss it living in the US. That is why Santo Domingo would be first city for me to visit while in the DR - place with the most history :glasses:

My heart is split between the two countries, so I can?t honestly choose between one of these. But I do not think it is fair for people to think of Benidorm as the costal areas of Spain. I suggest visiting the beautiful beaches in Formentera, Menorca or Mallorca, the DR would have difficulty winning hands down at some of the beaches you can find on these islands.

I know, the Benidorm-like coasts are just the most visited and well-known. I personally know Galicia pretty well, and its wild rocky coast is incredibly beautiful. But so is Samana for instance. They're just very different. But yes, Spain has some historical cities the likes of which cannot be found anywhere in the Western hemisphere. And about growing up among history, and whether or not it would become boring, no way. I have grown up in Amsterdam, another very beautiful historical city, and it never becomes boring (at least when it doesn't rain :().

Visit El-Andaluz, Madrid, Gallicia, Madeira, Ibiza, Los Canarios and Barcelona... the DR cannot compare in any way shape of form.. except that the life is much more laid-back and less organised.. you can really relax in the DR..

Stifling heat, sunburn ? to the peculiar pleasures of Spain's beaches in August, add the sting of the jellyfish. In the last couple of weeks, fleets of bloblike Pelagia noctiluca have reached beaches from Barcelona to M?laga.

In Catalonia alone, the Red Cross has treated 14,044 bathers for the painful stings. Local governments in Benidorm and elsewhere have posted signs in three languages warning of the dangers. The Interior Ministry has publicized advice for those who are stung ? wash the affected area with salt water, don't rub it, seek assistance. (In rare cases, an allergic reaction to the sting can prove deadly.)

I miss living in the US?????????:cheeky:

I meant to say that I miss old cities with museums, monuments, galleries, historical castles and parks ...

More about Spain - I went to Canary Islands several years ago. I loved beaches there - they have some with dark (almost black) sand - looks very different. I am not sure if DR has those ...

Hey Drangonfly32837, the thread is which one you prefer, I said and repeat I prefer Spain. As I cannot live in Spain (sometimes you have to give up something to gain others), I chose to live in DR, which is a BEAUTIFUL country full of BEAUTIFUL people and don't regret my decision. I go to Spain whenever I can on vacation.
So, do you have a problem with opinions?

There is no comparison, really. Since I am Dominican born and resident I see this from a different point of view. We spent some time in the summer visiting my sister who studies in Barcelona, I liked it, but I don't see myself living there.

What I really like about Spain (besides the food and wines) is the fabulous sense of freedom that you have there. Spain jumped from the 17th to the 21st century in no time. Where else would you take this picture (warning: may not be work-safe).

I read the comment at the bottom of the explanation of picture and it says that to a degree nudity is acceptable. Spain liberal indeed. DR still many years away before this is acceptable, if at all.
