The government looks at Cruise Ports (and the new AI resorts to be built in Pedernales ) as revenue. That is the driving force here. Every time a cruise port is discussed, it is also pointed out that the cruise lines capture every dollar possible for themselves. The amount that goes into the local economy is from any local employment, excursions and some supplies to the port.
A very tiny amount. Relative to the
Big Money that is being earned by those with their hand in the pot.
If anyone is looking for me to stand up and give applause for service jobs that might not even pay a living wage (I don't know this for sure, just speaking from experience) then they are in for a long wait.
It is the equivalent of throwing pesos onto the ground for the workers to pick up.
Accounting rounding errors for these business.
And the environment being endangered also.
I hate reading and writing on this site but on this important subject ,
I would not quite use the world
hate...but I do find it irritating at times.
Normally in coastal areas which have sensitive coral reefs the cruise ships anchor out at sea and passengers go ashore on boats that are called tenders. It is equally amazing that anyone could think a 500 bedroom hotel at Cabo Rojo could succeed when there is very little to do there. The small hotels in the town of Pedernales serve great food but are seldom full. I know that is all pie in the sky at present but it is worrying how a plan could get this far. .
You make a good point
@Kipling333. But as we see from the accusations being made in this article that when
Big Money is on the line...exceptions get made and those who stand in the way get taken out. More information on that below.
I guess it would be nice if there were no changes and the environment was not disturbed. However, the world does not work this way, nor does the DR government if you have noticed. There is Big Money revenue for the government along with every dollar captured by the cruise company. That is how the world works.
It would be nice for me if individuals posting on
DR1 did not have such a myopic view of life and understood that just because someone has a different view there is no need to always engage in ad hominem attacks (in bold no less). I think we are all adults up in here (biologically anyway...I cannot stipulate mental states).
So does someone really need to tell me that is how the world works ❓
There is another thread where the subject is about comments the environmental minister of the Dominican Republic made.
He called for an abrupt change to the way the country handles its present ecological footprint of production, consumption and final destination of wastes. “
The challenge is how to learn to coexist with nature,” the Minister told the journalists. Ceara-Hatton has been on the job since mid-July 2022 when he was appointed
after his predecessor was murdered, reportedly for not acquiescing to requested environmental permits.
I say to individuals who care to instruct anyone on "how the world works"...this is not the world. This is the Dominican Republic. Where an individual can walk into a government building, pop seven caps off and flush the radiator of someone. Then calmly walk out without even being challenged.
My most humble suggestion is that individuals save the
bold type in their posts to others and use it emphasize their points. What is the purpose of attacking others? When all it amounts to is a difference of opinion. I don't know anywhere in the world other than oppressive authoritarian governments where dissent is crushed and the rule of law ignored. I do not believe I live in such a place.
We are in the Dominican Republic.
Discussing issues in the Dominican Republic.
So the actual subject is the "way of the Dominican Republic"...not the world.
